In today's information age, we are overrun by data. Thanks to various sciences, loads of information about demographics, economics, healthcare, and weather patterns have emerged. And, people have developed ways easily analyze, process, and display all this information. Analyzing the mass amounts of data that one encounters in today's world is a necessary life skill. The first step in analyzing data is to calculate, understand, and to effectively to communicate the measures central tendency (mean, median, mode). In this class, students will use Legos to explore the various ways to calculate and express measures of central tendency. Using Legos, students will gain a deep understanding of mean, median, mode, and range that far surpasses simply plugging numbers into a formula. In class, a powerpoint will be used to lead students through the activities. Students will be provided with guided notes, which will be available upon registration. Students will fill in their notes and use their legos to calculate the measures of central tendencies. Background knowledge: Student should already know how to add and divide whole numbers.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Michigan Teaching Certificate in Mathematics
I began teaching in 1978 by forcing my little brothers to "play school" during summer breaks. I began my paid teaching career in 1991 by teaching at a public high school in Michigan. In my over 30 years of experience teaching, I have also taught at a community college, homeschool co-ops, an alternative school, and a virtual online school. I retired from teaching high school math at a public high school in 2018. Now, I enjoy being home to homeschool my son, play with my grandchildren, and teach students online from all over the world.
I graduated from Western Michigan University in 1992 with a degree in Mathematics, History, and Education. In 2005, I earned a Master's Degree in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College in Detroit. I am certified to teach mathematics in the state of Michigan.
I believe that students learn by DOING! My class is a safe place to try, make mistakes, and try again. My classes I incorporate plenty opportunity for practice, and I provide meaningful individualized feedback for students. During class I encourage active participation from each student, and provide ways for shy students to participate in ways that make them feel comfortable. I will work with your student to help them be successful in math.
Please message me if I can help you meet your math educational goals.
