Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
In this class, I will review key Algebra 1 concepts so you can be confident your student does not have gaps in their knowledge before moving to Algebra 2. We will also look ahead to some Algebra 2 content that you may not have seen before.

Anyone who has watched a movie or read a book twice knows that we often notice things we did not see the first time through. I will give students an overview of Algebra 1 topics, and show them a big picture view and tying together the concept threads. Some math curriculums teach individual concepts in isolation. But, I teach students to see the patterns and connections in math. Your student will have a firm foundation on which to continue their high school mathematic endeavors.

**Students can also take this class to have their skill assessed. Your student must turn in homework and participate in class in order for me to give feedback regarding your child's skills.

In this course, we will review the following topics:

1st Meeting: An review of functions, including function notation, representations, domain, and range

2nd Meeting: A review of linear functions, including writing linear equations in different forms and graphing

3rd Meeting: A review of exponent rules, including the product rule, the power rule, the quotient rule, and negative exponents.

4th Meeting: A review of factoring, including the binomials, trinomials, and polynomials with four terms.

5th Meeting: A review of graphing quadratic functions, absolute value functions, and exponential functions, including transformation of parent functions.

6th Meeting: A review of solving quadratics, including by factoring, square root method, completing the square, and the quadratic formula.

I provide guided notes and practice assignments (homework) for each class. However, homework is optional. I take my lead from parents as you know your child's needs best. Students may turn in homework, or not. I am happy to give individual feedback on homework which is turned in on time. I post homework answers in the classroom the evening before the next class meeting.

Some parents choose to have their child turn in homework, other parents choose to check their child's homework themselves with the answers I provide. And, some parents do not require their child to complete the homework, or only complete part of the homework. I am happy to customize the homework assignments to meet your child's needs. I am also willing to provide challenge problems for students who are interested.

During each class meeting, time will be devoted to reviewing practice assignments and reviewing skills. Students will have the opportunity to request questions they want me to review in class, and the opportunity to ask questions on assignments. Then, I will led the student through a new lesson using the guided notes. And, I am always available through the Outschool messaging system for students who need help between class meetings. Class recording will be provided for students who are unable to attend class.
