Class Experience

US Grade 7
ln this small class, students can master grade 7 level math, gain confidence and relieve math anxiety.

Twice a week, we will meet to cover the grade 7 curriculum. We will use an interactive whiteboard, and these notes are sent to the student after class.

🐟 We follow along with the Fishtank Learning curriculum (includes Common Core Standards), which is rigorous and problem-based. This program has an excellent track record of preparing students for college and beyond. You can take a look at www.fishtanklearning.com.

The goal of this math program is to help all students see themselves as confident and competent mathematicians who are able to apply their math knowledge both in and out of the classroom as global citizens.

This is how we work:
- students first build community through discussion of non-math topic
- then, the teacher introduces a new concept
- students join in and practice the concept with the teacher
- the teacher has students work individually on questions, and
supports the students as they work on the questions
- homework practice provided after class

I assign home practice after each class. Those students who want to master the concepts will want to complete this work each week. It will take about 30-45 minutes per week.

I am a certified, senior math teacher, dedicated to helping middle school students gain a strong math foundation.

Our lessons are divided into eight units:
Unit 1
Proportional Relationships
Unit 2
Operations With Rational Numbers
Unit 3
Numerical and Algebraic Expressions
Unit 4
Equations and Inequalities
Unit 5
Percent and Scaling
Unit 6
Geometry
Unit 7
Statistics
Unit 8
Probability

☀️ An important note about using Zoom and Videos:

Students are asked to turn on their video for this class. I provide students with opportunities to communicate and discuss their thinking. This improves when we all have our videos on. Seeing student's faces and body language provides me with useful information to inform instruction. Ultimately, this shifts power away from the teacher being the possessor of knowledge to students being the constructors of it.

Class Interaction:
- Teacher and students share an interactive white board
- Guided notes may be provided for each class, just prior to the session
- Handouts with problem sets and answer keys are provided after each class
- Students are encouraged to participate and write on the interactive whiteboard
Learning Goals
Students will learn and/or review important math concepts taught in grade 7.

I provide students with the skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in high school, college and beyond.

I teach high-quality content. My material is rigorous and meaningful to everyday life.

I requalified as a Senior Math Teacher at the University of Toronto in 2015. So, I am current regarding math teaching techniques. My classes are research-based, brain-boosting, and most of the "new" buzz words.

I follow Fishtank Learning (fishtanklearning.org), a charter school curriculum that has received the highest ratings by EdReports (https://www.edreports.org). Fishtank Learning prepares students to succeed in college and beyond.

.........................................................................................

I am an experienced classroom math teacher and hold a professional teaching certificate (University of Toronto) in the province of Ontario, Canada.

...................................................................................................................................................

I also have a Masters in Business Administration (MBA 2009, University of Calgary). I have worked for large corporations (pharmaceutical and telecommunications), plus I started my own successful business working with engineers, technicians, scientists. I have a lot of first-hand experience how math is used in the "real" world.

.......................................................................................

When I'm not teaching online, I am busy gardening (my passion), playing chef in the kitchen, hiking in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, cycling, or just hanging out with friends. Cosimo, my cat, likes to check zoom, so don't be surprised if he tries to show off in the middle of a lesson!
