Class Experience

As a Reading Specialist, I love encouraging my students to seek and find books that inspire them to read more. Using books that students are currently reading, the teacher will provide new learning on making rich text connections. Students will discuss books using the guiding questions. Students will learn how to make the text connections of text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world. This is a discussion based class in which students will be challenged to think and discuss reading in a rigorous way.

Students will be encouraged to engage in making connections in their text with the following guiding questions-

Make a Text-to-Text Connection- What parts of this book reminds you of other books you have read?
Make a Text-to-Self Connection- What about this book inspires you? What connection can you make to your own life in this book?
Make a Text-to-World Connection- What ways can you connect what you read in your book to things going on in the real world?

All students will be given the chance to share the insights they learned from reading their book. Students will be able to ask one another questions and make connections among all of the books presented during class using the three guiding questions above.

Required- Students must be ready to share at least one book with the rest of the class in this discussion based class format. It is encouraged that students have their book accessible in order to answer any questions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Mrs. Fernandez. I am excited to be on this learning adventure with you.

I am currently a Reading and Math Specialist at a K-5 school in Arizona. I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, along with my first Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction and my second Master's degree in Leadership and Administration. In addition, I have both Reading and Math Endorsements which allows me to specialize in both subjects.

I will be teaching all subjects at the elementary level including some fun crafts/projects along the way. As a Reading and Math Specialist, I believe all kids are capable of learning! I have a passion for helping struggling students meet their goals through a growth mindset.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two sons. I also love hiking, yoga, and reading in my spare time.
