Beginner Level

Please note this is a Self-Paced Class with 8 lessons. Teacher will be available to respond to questions or issues during the 8 weeks.   This Self-Paced Class provides students the opportunity to work on a new project anytime and at their pace. 

Students should be able to read commands and follow along with video.  Lessons are aimed for students with some coding experience.  Student new to coding may need adult support.  

Students will learn the basics of programming, problem solving and critical thinking skills through coding. 

Students will learn and work the following commands in a series of classes:  
- use different event blocks to start your program  
- code one or more sprites
- change the look and size of a sprite
- use one or more backdrops
- create/modify you sprites and backdrop
- add speech to sprites
- add sounds to your project
- use repeat/forever/if - then controls
- hide and show sprites
- use simple variables 
- use operators 
- pen tool to draw 

What to expect weekly: 
- Code project as you follow along with video
- Pause, rewind, and review video as needed
- Communicate with teacher using Outschool message board with questions 
- Share project link if you need teacher to review an error
- Optional challenge provided at the end

Syllabus

Lesson 1:

Animate Your Name

 Code a fun project to make the letters of your name dance and change colors with music of your choice.

Lesson 2:

Short Story

 Create a short digital story of cat walking through the city and going to school.

Lesson 3:

Soccer Game

 Create a short soccer game using fun sport sprites.

Lesson 4:

Dance Party

 Create a dance party using as many sprites as you want.  Each sprite will have a different dance move.

Parental Guidance

Students will need to create a Scratch account in order to save projects. Scratch is free.

Hello! My name is Cynthia Burleigh. I live in Texas. I graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a Bachelor in Science in Information Systems. I started my career in a banking institute, but quickly realized I wanted to become a teacher. I have been working in education for 15 years, 3 years teaching with Outschool. I am Bilingual Certified - speak English and Spanish and teach Bilingual and ESL students. My teaching experience includes: Robotics, Codings, Spanish, Pre K - 3rd grade Bilingual instruction, Bilingual Reading Specialist, and STEM teacher. 

I love to teach Reading, Math, Spanish, Technology and STEM (including robotics). I love spending time with family, teaching, and running. A little fun fact about me...I run marathons for fun! I can't wait to see you in class.
