Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
This class is an introduction to life science and genetics. It is the second in a series of classes geared toward getting middle school students that have never studied life science before. The series covers topics students need to understand to prepare for high school biology.

In this LIVE course, which is geared toward an introduction to DNA and genetics, your student will learn:

Lesson 1 - What is DNA?
- Structure and Basic Function

Lesson 2 - Chromosomes and Alleles
- Digital Worksheet on DNA and Chromosomes
- Project #1: DNA Model
- Directions and Rubric

Lesson 3 - **Gamete Production** (Meiosis)
- Video on Meiosis and Inheritance
- Practice Ordering the Steps of Meiosis

Lesson 4 - Meiosis and Fertilization Review
- More Practice with the Steps of Meiosis

Lesson 5 - Mendelian Inheritance & Punnett Squares
- Monohybrid Crosses and Using Punnett Squares

Lesson 6 - Practice Problems - Monohybrid Crosses
- Review and Practice

Lesson 7 - Dihybrid Crosses
- Dihybrid Crosses and Using Punnett Squares
- Practice Problems

Lesson 8 - Dihybrid Review and Other Inheritance Patterns
- Practice Problems and Examples
- Class Review Game

Each class will be a short lesson, videos for reinforcement, group activities, review games, and vocabulary review. Students will be given weekly note sheets, one project (DNA model), digital practice sheets, and small (optional) quizzes to test your student's understanding.

All work can be completed digitally, but if your student prefers doing the projects on paper, the following materials are suggested: paper, colored pencils, and small household items for the DNA model.
Learning Goals
By the end of this course, your student will understand the basics of genetic material and inheritance. They will learn about the structure and function of DNA, that genes are located on chromosomes, how genetic material is passed from parent to offspring (cells only, no other details), and how to calculate the probability of traits being passed from parent to offspring.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Meiosis is the formation of gametes, the cells used in reproduction. We only address the cell division and the random assortment of DNA that leads to genetically diverse offspring.
Supply List
All work can be completed digitally.

If your student prefers doing the projects on paper, the following materials are suggested: paper, colored pencils, and small household items for the DNA model.
