Description
Class Experience
Chemistry is one of the pillars of middle school science. Your student will be introduced to chemistry through a mix of hands-on experience with classic classroom preparation in this course. We will break apart each concept, look at the parts, and combine them to see the whole picture. There will be drawings, hands-on activities, and opportunities to practice concepts for better understanding. Each week will focus on a specific idea, and there will be an opportunity for practice and...
This class is taught in English.
At the end of this course, your student will be able to: - Create models/drawings to represent the arrangement and charges of subatomic particles in an atom (protons, neutrons, and electrons). - Distinguish between atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds. - Use atomic mass, atomic number, and symbol to determine an element's placement on the Periodic Table. - Investigate the property of density and provide evidence that properties like density do not change for a pure substance. - Balance chemical equations to show how the total number of atoms for each element does not change in chemical reactions, and as a result, mass is always conserved in a closed system. (Law of Conservation of Mass.)
I will provide OPTIONAL practice sheets to reinforce concepts from class.
1 file available upon enrollmentGuided notes are sent on Sundays. Optional: Paper, colored pencils, markers, or pens for notes. *I will upload a periodic table each student can print and use, or they can bring their own.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Formative: Frequent questions and prompts to engage in discussion and determine the level of understanding. Summative: Quiz with an answer key provided at the end of class.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
