Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
  • In our one-on-one structured literacy tutoring sessions, your child will embark on a personalized learning journey designed to systematically build their reading and writing skills from the ground up. The curriculum is tailored to meet your child's unique needs, with specific learning goals aimed at ensuring they not only understand fundamental literacy concepts but also apply them confidently in everyday contexts. Here's what your child will learn: Phonemic Awareness: Your child will learn to recognize and manipulate the sounds in words, including skills such as sound isolation, blending, segmenting, and phoneme manipulation (adding, deleting, or substituting sounds). Phonics and Decoding: They will gain a strong foundation in phonics, understanding the relationship between letters and sounds, and master decoding skills to fluently read unfamiliar words by breaking them down into manageable parts. Fluency: Your child will develop reading fluency, focusing on pace, accuracy, and expression. Activities will include repeated reading and modeled fluent reading, emphasizing the role of punctuation in expressive reading. Vocabulary Development: We will expand your child's vocabulary through direct teaching of new words, exploration of synonyms and antonyms, and the use of context clues within texts. They will be encouraged to use a creative and varied vocabulary in their writing and speaking. Reading Comprehension: Your child will learn strategies to understand, interpret, analyze, and reflect on texts, including summarizing, questioning, predicting, inferring, and identifying main ideas and supporting details. Writing Skills: They will develop their writing skills, from crafting simple sentences to composing more complex texts. We'll explore narrative, expository, and creative writing, covering the writing process from brainstorming to editing. Spelling and Grammar: Through focused instruction, your child will improve their spelling accuracy, learning about spelling rules, patterns (including blends, digraphs, and trigraphs), silent letters, and tricky spellings. Basic grammar concepts will also be covered to enhance writing quality. Literary Appreciation: Exposure to a wide range of genres and texts will foster an appreciation for literature’s diverse forms, themes, and styles. Critical Thinking and Analysis: Encouragement to think critically about texts will enhance their ability to analyze characters, plot, themes, and authors' purposes. They'll learn to support their opinions with evidence from the text. Personalized Communication Skills: Though the one-on-one format focuses more on individual learning, we'll incorporate elements that foster communication skills, encouraging your child to express their ideas and responses effectively. By achieving these goals, your child will be equipped with the essential literacy skills needed for academic success and lifelong learning. They will emerge from our sessions as a more confident reader and writer, ready to explore the vast world of literature and express their thoughts and ideas with clarity and creativity.

Colored Pencils or Markers: These will be utilized in activities designed to color or visually organize information, making learning more interactive and fun.

Access to a Printer: While I will provide all necessary worksheets and handouts, having the option to print these documents at home could be helpful. If printing isn't feasible, your child can easily view these materials on a computer or tablet.

A Quiet Space for Reading and Writing: A comfortable, distraction-free workspace is vital for maximizing focus and enhancing the overall learning experience.

A Small Whiteboard and Dry-Erase Markers: Particularly useful for dynamic spelling and phonics exercises. Approximate Cost: $10-$15.
