Let's play piano! In this group course, beginning students will learn the basics of playing the keyboard. Students will have the opportunity to play some well known folk songs such as "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." This course is for students who have finished Level 1A part 1 group course. Students may also join this course if they can read notes "A-B-C-D-E-F-G" in the treble clef and bass clef. Students should already be familiar with the rhythms "quarter, half, dotted half, and whole" both notes and rests. They should be comfortable playing 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 time signatures. Students should understand the articulations slur and staccato. They should be able to read the intervals seconds, thirds, fourths, fifths. These are the prerequisites for this course. In this class students will use the "Bastien New Traditions All In One Piano Course" Level 1A by Lisa, Lori and Jane Bastien. The purchase of this book entitles students to access the Kjors Interactive Piano Studio available for desktop and tablet. The Interactive Piano Studio will give students the opportunity to play along side a backing track. Students will be able to share what they have been learning by creating videos using the Flipgrid website. This secure website allows only the student's teacher and classmates to see their progress. If you do not want your student to use the Flipgrid platform, they can also submit videos directly to the teacher through the Outschool classroom. Students will also be allowed to show what they have learned at the end of class if time permits. In this course students will learn to play a five finger pattern in the keys of G and C. They will also play a middle C position. They will use sharps and flats to play new songs. They will play songs with a left hand melody. Students will be expected to practice outside of class time. Students should bring a pencil to class in order to complete the writing assignments that will be presented in class. Most of these assignments will be completed during class time, but some outside work may also be necessary. The teacher will need to see the students hands on the keyboard to ensure that the student is playing correctly. You may need to adjust your webcam or device to make this view possible. The course will break down as follows: Lesson 1: Review middle C and five finger C positions. Review slurs and staccato notes. Lesson 2: Learn low G-A-B in the bass clef staff. Lesson 3: Review 8va and learn to play 15ma. Lesson 4: Play a song with a left hand melody. Lesson 5: Play B-C-D in the treble clef. Lesson 6: Review sharps and flats. Lesson 7: Review staccato and legato while using sharps and flats. Lesson 8: Review dynamics. Lesson 9: Play harmonic intervals in G position. Lesson 10: Learn crescendo and diminuendo. Lesson 11: Play "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Lesson 12: Learn ledger line D in the bass clef. Lesson 13: Play "Our Favorite Team" Lesson 14: Review what we have learned and student showcase. This schedule is subject to change based on the needs of the individual learners in each session of the course.
