Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This is a class designed to give your child intentional practice with reading/sounding out words that have a targeted phonics concept.

When you enroll your child, please message to tell me which skill you’d like me to focus on. I will send the game board to be printed ahead of our meeting. Your child will need bingo chips or counters. Five bingo counters should be a different colour than the rest. These five are used as the “battleships”.

“How to Play: This is a game for two players. Each player needs one copy of the game board. Players must secretly select 5 words and place a counter or their own “battleship” on them. Players take turns asking if the other player’s ship is on a word {“Is your battleship on ‘cap’?}. If correct, their opponent must removed their ship from the board because it has been “sunk”. The winner is the first person to locate all their opponent’s battleships. Players can choose to use different counters to keep track of the words they’ve already asked.”

Phonics Concepts:

Parental Guidance
Please print the game board before our class and have counters (bingo chips or coin or lego piece) ready as well. I’m using a game board that was shared for this purpose.
Pre-Requisites
Your child should be able to read and sound out words. Even if they’re not consistent they can still play and we’ll work at it together to improve. The simplest game board is cvc words (consonant vowel consonant, ie. cab, zip).
Supply List
bingo chips (counters) - 5 ‘battleships’ of a different color or item
Bingo card printed out
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I use the UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) teaching manual/program in my instruction. Their scope and sequence is what I use for the purpose of this game.

I’ve used the UFLI program for two years in the classroom as a literacy intervention teacher in a public school. I worked collaboratively with the classroom teachers and we found it to be highly effective with all students in teaching/solidifying phonics for the readers. It is especially effective for the students who needed intervention. I’ve taught for over 10 years (1st grade teacher for 1 year and intervention for 9 years).
