This class will be an extension from Let’s Make Music Together Level one. Students are encouraged to take the first class but are not required. The topics that will be covered over the span of four weeks are as follows: Week 1: This week, your student will review their knowledge of music notation and expand on that with dotted half notes, eighth notes, and dotted quarter notes as well as more complex rhythms. Week 2: Your student will learn the classification of musical instruments such as percussion, strings ,woodwinds, and brass. We will listen to examples from each and determine which instrument can play high or low pitches. This is a fun class and students are encouraged to bring their own instruments if they have any! Week 3: Your student will learn to differentiate between noteworthy eras in music such as classical, romantic, modern, and jazz. We will listen to examples from each as well as historic figures to remember. Week 4: This week will be a review of the topics discussed in the past weeks as well as a showcase or project for your student. They may feel free to show off their skills in the instrument of their choice, a composition they have been working on, or talk about their favorite composer/musician.
Learning Goals
My goal for your student is to gain more confidence in rhythm and the instrument of their choice , as well as history of music theory. By the end of this class, your student will know the names of inspiration men and woman from music history, as well as gain an understanding of how music evolves.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Valorie Hammonds. I have over 12 years of experience teaching piano lessons and feel very comfortable teaching music theory in a fun and unique way! My lessons can be laid back or by-the-book, whatever your child is comfortable with. I have taught over 100 students and have met so many incredible people. I truly believe that everyone can learn music and it is a basic human desire. Music is my lifeblood and teaching is my passion!
I graduated from Randolph Macon with a bachelor degree in Music and Education. There I learned how to make music theory fun and easy to learn in a classroom environment as well as private lessons. My main focus was piano and voice, although I also studied flute and cello as well.
I believe that students make the best teachers and I’m a lifelong learner. I am always finding new teaching methods and exploring any subject that interests me. I have always been interested in the language and history of music. Thank you for supporting me and I look forward to seeing your child in my classroom!
