Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
In this class the instructor follows a variation of a research-based (Marzano) five-step process for teaching vocabulary:

STEP 1: Teacher introduces the new vocabulary word and presents it in a sentence. Students use clues from the context to determine its definition.

STEP 2: Teacher shares definition(s) of the word.

STEP 3: Students explain the new vocabulary word in their own words.

STEP 4: Class creates a drawing or picture to represent the word, and come up with synonyms and antonyms.

STEP 5: Students participate in activities, games, and opportunities to expand their knowledge of the word and discuss it with others.

Learning Goals

Expand productive vocabulary (use new words for speaking and writing).
Increase reception vocabulary (learn new words for reading and listening).
