Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 11
Since this course is tailored to the learner's specific needs, we will discuss the student's learning style and techniques to help the student reach pre-determined learning goals. As the learner progresses, the pre-determined learning goals will be updated to meet the improved needs of the learner.

Topics we will cover:
     •	Parts of Speech
     •	Reading Comprehension
     •	Sentence fragments/ Run-On Sentences
     •	Verbal Communication Skills
     •	Punctuations
     •	Test-taking tips
     •	Compound words
     •	Synonyms/Antonyms
     •	Homophones
     •	Academic Writing Process

The learner, together with the tutor, will be able to choose reading material to practice comprehension, vocabulary, pronunciation, and the ability to highlight key points from the reading material. We will focus on clarifying the main ideas and summarizing each story. We will use critical thinking skills to discuss the author's purpose. The student will apply learning techniques to interpret stories, express opinions, and argue or defend their view when answering the questions.

We will aim to cover topics that engage the learner's interest while improving reading, writing, spelling, and vocabulary skills.

Each session may use a variety of techniques including but not limited to discussions, lectures, videos, and games.

The student will have a safe space to be able to ask questions and have a more detailed explanation of the correct answers.

The student will be able to practice grammar application through NOREDINK under the tutor's supervision.

The student will create and organize a personal reference notebook for note-taking and vocabulary.

The student will be expected to clearly communicate ideas and critically consider questions and answers to make sure they are completely understanding the material as we progress.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!
My name is Yolonda Mooney. I have spent the last twenty years in the educational realm. I have raised one child to adulthood while working in my city’s public schools. I have a BA in English and Psychology with a minor in Biblical Studies. I have taught US History, Texas History, Social Studies, English, Grammar, ESL, Writing, and lower-level Math. When my son graduated in 2012, I had the unique opportunity to step into a new level of teaching. I began teaching at a local community college. I launched my online teaching career in 2017 and continue to enjoy guiding the many learner I have all around the world.

It was at the community college that I discovered how important it is for students to be prepared for the college environment. Success in college does not come without preparation! For four years, I taught students who were not entirely prepared for the college experience. As an instructor, I developed student-centered activities to reinforce online lectures provided in a flipped classroom setting. Students explored themselves and how to work within a collaboration. I also educated students on practical applications to improve college success. I developed assignments to engage students’ learning styles and writing potentials.

I am passionate about teaching and learning. I believe in empowering students to find their own style of learning. I'm not particularly eager to lecture my students. However, I want to prepare them for the professors that do. My classes involve a mixture of in-class discussions, debating an issue, self-examination, collaboration, technology, and writing. The path to discovery is not always easy, but I try to make it fun! In most of my classes, there will be pre-class requirements.

I request that all students actively participate in my classes. Practice is part of success. My philosophy is that all children are capable of learning anything, but not all children learn in the same manner or at the same speed. I am happy to teach 1:1 classes if requested. If you don't see a time that works for your child, feel free to contact me and I can try to accommodate your schedule. I am honored to be a part of your child’s educational journey.
