During our first meeting the student will be assessed for phonological awareness. Children who have higher levels of phonological awareness (awareness of the sounds in words) are typically stronger decoders when they begin to read. In this class students will engage in activities to develop phonemic awareness, learn all about CVC words, master short vowels and short vowel word families, learn beginning and ending digraphs, as well as long vowel sounds. During each class they will learn a different phonics skill and practice using that skill in order to read and write words. The following will be covered during weekly meetings: *Rhyming Practice - identifying two words that rhyme, sorting rhyming pictures *Syllable Segmenting - counting the number of syllables in a word, sorting pictures by number of syllables *Blending and Segmenting - listening to phonemes and blending them, and counting the number of sounds *CVC Words - Initial Sounds *CVC Words - Ending Sounds *CVC Words - Medial Vowel Sounds *Short Vowel Sounds Activities *Beginning Digraphs *Ending Digraphs *Long Vowel Sounds
Learning Goals
