Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
Research shows that children not only need plenty of time to write, but also need explicit writing instruction in order to develop into confident writers. Learners will engage in planning their stories before they write, and then add details to create sentences to tell interesting stories with characters, setting and a plot. After they are finished writing they will edit their stories.

-Each day class will begin with a writing lesson and demonstration. (5-10 minutes)
-Then, students fill out their graphic organizer. (5-10 minutes)
-Next, students will engage in writing their own stories (20-25 minutes)

To ensure that students understand the writing tasks, all graphic organizers include the prompt and a little picture to represent the writing prompt. The organizers also include word banks to give students ideas and help them with spelling.

This is an ongoing class, so students are welcome to join any week. I keep my class size small so that I can offer effective feedback and guidance. Students should be able to read and write basic sentences independently.

During independent writing, students will individually conference with the teacher to brainstorm ideas and revise/edit drafts.
Grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling will be addressed.

Parents are welcome to take a picture of their child's work following each class and send it to the teacher for comments and edits.

I love teaching reading and writing skills to children! As a result, I have delved into the research about best practices of literacy instruction, and started my own afterschool literacy program for children. I have a bachelor’s degree in French, a credential to teach English as a foreign language from Georgetown University, and a master’s degree from the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. I have more than 15 years of teaching experience in international primary schools, and am passionate about encouraging and supporting children to believe in their abilities and reach their full potential. When I am not teaching, I spend time with my husband, seven year old daughter, and our puppy named Teddy (Bear).
