Welcome to the the most comprehensive, online cartooning class for students that have learnt basic drawing skills and are ready to pathway into some all mighty drawing challenges.

Students can start at anytime as course continues again the following term if you have missed anything.

My name is Rob, chief tutorial designer and founder of Mcleay Workshops, an online cartoon school for people that can’t stop doodling.  I teach students the ability to draw well, using the Draw 8 Method a process I designed while teaching over 2000 students throughout Auckland, New Zealand. 

I have brought my project making skills from the classroom to an online environment, giving students the chance to flex their drawing chops with plenty of exciting and cool projects.

Every week students can log on and join my live workshop, where they can have the opportunity to learn the secrets of drawing like a pro. These are tried and tested methods from the animation and gaming industry. The workshops are fun, engaging, and educational. Week of 7th February 2023 - Robot TV is Broken! 

"Welcome to the world of comic creation! Are you ready to bring your wildest ideas to life on the page? This week, we're diving in with a bang as we tackle the crisis of a broken robot TV. With our trusty mouse character at the helm, we'll use basic comic techniques to bring the story to life and explore the endless possibilities of story creation. Get ready to unleash your inner artist as we learn about character design and let our imaginations run wild. It's going to be a wild ride, so buckle up and let's get started!"

Week of 14th February2023 - Eat the Candy 

"Get ready for a sugary adventure in the world of alien character design! This week, we're creating our very own Fudsy aliens, creatures with a sweet tooth for candy. Using our artistic skills, we'll bring these creatures to life with bold colors and imaginative features. But the fun doesn't stop there! We'll also be designing some basic game assets and sketching out a prototype game featuring our Fudsy aliens. Imagine guiding your candy-eating character through a world of obstacles and challenges. The possibilities are endless and the excitement is off the charts. Are you ready to design your own Fudsy alien and take on the challenge of game creation? Let's do this!"

Week of 21st February2023- Flingers

"Are you ready to bring your game design skills to the next level? This week, we're taking on the challenge of creating our own Flingers, characters with special powers that allow them to fling themselves through the air. Using our artistic abilities, we'll bring these dynamic characters to life and imagine all the ways they can be used in a prototype game. But the fun doesn't stop there! We'll also be creating a storyboard that will help sell our game to a wider audience. From outlining the gameplay to showcasing the unique features of our Flingers, this storyboard will be a crucial tool in getting our game off the ground. Get ready to let your creativity soar as we design, develop, and pitch our very own Flinger game. It's going to be an epic adventure!"

Week of 28th February 2023  The Ghost Hunters

"Are you ready to hunt some ghosts? This week, we're diving into the world of paranormal investigation as we design the next generation of Ghost Hunter characters and their Ghost Capture Contraptions. With our inner inventors at the helm, we'll use our pencils and imaginations to create unique and exciting devices for trapping and studying ghosts. But the fun doesn't stop there! We'll also be developing the characters that will use these contraptions, bringing to life a diverse and dynamic cast of ghost hunters. Get ready to channel your inner scientist and artist as we create a ghost-hunting world unlike any other. Who knows, with a little bit of creativity and determination, we might just become wildly successful ghost hunters ourselves. Let's do this!"

Learning Goals

Get live and FULL access to all my studio projects that I have taught over the last 20 years that have been inspired by the gaming and animation industries. Your child can test their drawing chops by completing mini “studio briefs” that will give them a portfolio to die for. Students will learn the fundamentals of Character Design that covers hair, eyes, facial expressions, movement, character model sheets, principles of animation and challenging art projects.

The Bumper Cartoon Project Book Of Epic Awesomeness! Is a collection of projects from the last decade that I have compiled and made into a resource book. I do recommend purchasing and downloading for use outside of class as it continues on from what I teach. It is not essential to enrolling though, more of an add on. Each week I will be uploading and using a project from the book.

My Professional Background
I have over 25 years experience in drawing, design and teaching art to all ages. I have published multiple books in how to draw cartoons and developed drawing classes where I've taught over 2000 students.

For YEARS I studied the professional artists from Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks, trying to understand the EASIEST WAY TO DRAW, then I started teaching CARTOON & DESIGN WORKSHOPS  and developed the Draw 8 Method, a systematic approach using 8 simple steps that anyone can learn. To date over 20000+  students online and face to face who have studied with me with some going on to work in animation and gaming.
