Hands, feet, faces, heads from all angles... Let's learn and practice drawing the human body together each week. In this ongoing class, learners will draw different parts of the human body to gain new skills and confidence. In every lesson, learners will think about shapes, light and shadow, line, and some anatomy! This class will not only teach students valuable drawing techniques that can be applied to other subjects and styles of art, but will also give learners the opportunity to practice applying what they learn. Shapes We will learn to identify and accurately draw the big shapes of the body to set a strong foundation. Light and Shadow We will learn to pinpoint the light and shadow to give the drawing more depth and dimension. Anatomy We will learn to identify anatomical points to make our drawing feel more believable. This class will be interactive. Learners will work together to pinpoint the steps in my drawing or example first before individually working on their own drawings. Plenty of examples and demos will be provided and explained. The class atmosphere will be light, and questions will be welcome at anytime. Individualized, constructive critiques and praise will be given at the end of class! Teacher expertise and credentials
GOAL
Welcome! My name is Deborah Rodrigues, but you can call me Deebs. I am a professional children's book illustrator and teacher. I am continually inspired by teaching young artists and watching their creativity grow and flourish. My goal on Outschool is to help young, aspiring artists gain the confidence and independence to create their own masterpieces by teaching essential art techniques.
Come learn how to draw and paint with me in a relaxed, encouraging environment one sketch and painting at a time!
EDUCATION
I have been drawing and creating stories all my life. I graduated from Grand Central Atelier in New York City in 2017 where I studied academic fine art. I was accepted twice into the copyist program at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to study and copy from 19th century paintings. While I love classical art pieces, I enjoy using this method to create personal illustrations that tell a story. I furthered my education by completing the Cartoon I program at the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic design where I studied, cartooning, illustration, comics, character design and storytelling.
CLASSROOM STRUCTURE
In all my classes, I draw alongside learners to foster a laidback, curious atmosphere that encourages creativity, experimentation, and the understanding that mistakes are part of the process. We begin each class by studying and observing my reference and decoding the simple and complex shapes together before beginning our own drawings. As I believe in a student-centered approach, learners are often asked if they would like to choose topics as we learn or practice fundamental drawing techniques.
ABOUT ME
I truly enjoy being an illustrator and teacher. I love combining what I learned from copying old masterpieces and observing nature with my own imagination. When I'm not with family, you'll find me at the library, bookstores, or outside, gaining inspiration to write and illustrate stories. I was homeschooled during my middle and high school years and during that time, I fell in love with birds. My brother and I once made our own bird book of all the birds we saw in our neighborhood - me drawing the pictures and him writing all the facts.
I am looking forward to seeing you in my classroom!
