So you want to be a news journalist? In this 5-day beginning level course, students will learn how to write and present unique, newsworthy articles and learn how to publish their work in print or online.

Class experience

Students will be introduced to different approaches to editorial writing, learn professional news journalism practices, practice organizing their writing into the industry-standard format, and practice reporting their own news stories. Students will be guided through the course activities by a practicing freelance news writer and award-winning published author and professional editor.
The instructor is a practicing news journalist for Times Media Group and her stories have been featured in six valley-wide newspapers. She has been published in both national and international print magazines, featured in academic journals and invited to write topical guest blogs. She is the author of one award-winning novel, with a second in the works. She is a professional proofreader and editor for hire and has been a managing partner of a professional writers' critique circle for over a year. She holds a Master's in Organizational Leadership from Grand Canyon University. Her previous students have successfully published their own works in addition to winning creative contests.

What this class is NOT:
This class is NOT a proofreading or writing mechanics course. We will focus on the organization of information, critical analysis of written examples, producing oral presentations, and engaging in active listening skills.
This class is NOT a speech class. Although it involves an element of public speaking, it is not a performance class and no acting skills are necessary, nor is memorization required. It is highly recommended that students write legibly (or type) and practice reading their material out loud before the second through fifth classes.
This class is NOT a soapbox or platform for political, religious or other highly controversial or debatable topics. The teacher accepts NO liability for the material created by students and by participating in this class, parents automatically assume full liability for the works produced by their child. If, in the teacher’s best judgment, the student’s subject matter is inappropriate for the class, the teacher will do their best to stop the student’s reading and offer an alternative submission option in the form of a private message, that can be evaluated strictly on the student’s writing technique as outlined in the homework assignment."
Please have paper/notebook and pen/pencils during classes. Timer videos from YouTube and other teacher-curated handouts will be provided to assist with the student's experience.
