US Grade 4 - 7
This week long summer camp combines three of my one time classes into a convenient camp session. Class will meet 3 times per week and a different topic will be explored each week. Day 1: Paragraph Writing Basics-Get Creative and Use Your Senses Learning to write a proper paragraph with appropriate length and detail can be daunting and sometimes even boring! In this class, students will use their senses to create a creative and compelling paragraph that meets the guidelines of a strong and thorough paragraph. Students will walk away with a strong 5-7 sentence paragraph that will provide a foundation for strong paragraph writing regardless of topic. Students should be able to write and compose sentences and words with little to no guidance. Students will submit their completed paragraphs at the end of the course for feedback and guidance to help them with further writing projects and assignments. Day 2: Character Development Students will learn how to create engaging and dynamic sci-fi and/or fantasy characters. In writing, the development of characters can either make or break the story. Students will learn how to develop multiple aspects of their character in order to make them engaging, exciting, relatable and compelling. Throughout the class, students will engage in a variety of exercises to help them fine tune their character (including name, special powers, talents, attitude, behaviors). By the end of the class, students will have all the ingredients for a character that will bring their writing to life! Students will also engage in providing feedback and ideas to each other in a collaborative format. Week 3: Journaling for ideas Journaling is an effective form of brainstorming for creative writing. In this class, students will engage in fun journaling activities designed to spark creativity. Students will journal based on prompts provided by the teacher. Creativity will be encouraged within the confines of the classroom setting. Students will then share what they have written and react to each other's writing. Students will be encouraged to reflect on the writing process each week and also verbalize how their classmates' writing inspired them. Learners will have an optional assignment to complete after the class ends where they can compose a creative paragraph or short story based on the work done throughout the camp. This can be submitted to me for feedback. Students should understand sentence format and be able to compose sentences on their own.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the elements of descriptive writing, character creation/development, and using journaling for ideas.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a college instructor, I have come across many adult students who do not know how to compose a strong 5-7 sentence paragraph, write a thesis statement or use varying sentence styles. I plan to cover these same skills while also making the topic and the process fun and engaging. The key to learning writing skills for reluctant writers is to make it fun!
