Class Experience

US Grade 11 - 12
Looking to perfect your college application essays? Whether it is a Common App personal statement, supplemental essays, or a scholarship essay, this 3-day writing camp will help you feel confident about your writing as you prepare for the college application process.

On day one, the teacher will lead 3 brainstorming exercises to help students determine possible personal statement topics. Students will be given "think time" to complete the activities as well as time to share their ideas to receive feedback. (Students may share by unmuting or by typing in the chat, whichever they prefer.) We will conclude class by looking at the common app prompts and discussing how the ideas from the brainstorming activities relate to the prompts. If students are working on prompts other than the common app prompts, we can discuss those too. Given the versatility of the prompts and how widely accepted the common app is, the common app prompts are an excellent starting point for most high school seniors or those looking to get a head start on the college application process.

On day two, students will review successful essay samples based on their respective prompts. If time permits, students will also have writing time to work on their rough drafts.

On day three, students will have writing time to make more progress on their personal statement drafts. Additionally, if desired, students will share their essays with the class and will receive peer and teacher feedback. Students may submit their essays within one week of the final day of class for additional teacher review and comments.
