Class experience
US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Beginner - Intermediate Level
NOTE: This is a 6 week section of my Jump Start or Fill In The Gaps reading class. Each session incorporates the most effective brain based reading strategies that I used during my 34 years of teaching children to read in schools and tutoring 1:1 on Outschool since 2020. Learners will be assessed for their entry level and placed into the program materials that match their current skill level, or point of need (Beginning, Extension, or Challenge). Because not all materials work for all...
Students will learn and progress at their own level in the following foundational reading skills: phonological awareness spelling-letter sounds sight words phonics / syllables / morphemes reading connected text spelling/writing instruction (letter formation if needed; sentence formation and mechanics; encoding words)
I am a certified reading specialist with a Masters Degree in reading. I have a strong interest in "how the BRAIN actually learns to read", and during instruction, I teach this to children. (Most people don't know that our brain is actually NOT wired to read, which is why some children struggle more than others!) My sessions are highly individualized and based on the way each individual students' brain processes sounds and print. I have taught in a variety of capacities in public schools and universities. These roles include teaching kindergarten/first/or second grade classrooms, and work as a K-5 school Reading Specialist; teaching undergraduate reading courses at the university level; assisting new teachers as a sought after Mentor Teacher; and training teachers in reading programs through school staff development sessions throughout California. I am now retired from public school teaching, and since 2020 I have enjoyed bringing the joys of reading success to learners on Outschool!
Homework Offered
Students will practice their connected reading skills and sight words by practicing the stories or word lists taught during each session.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class

This class includes multi-sensory learning activities and is personalized to support and meet the individual needs of learners with the kinds of language processing problems associated with dyslexia.
Supply list: * dry erase marker (the thin, but not fine point, kind) * eraser for dry erase marker pen (this can be a rolled up old sock) * several plastic sheet protector pockets or plastic pockets that you can slip an 8x11 paper into (this will serve as an erasable "white board" substitute to place the lined writing paper into, as well as to use for storage of reference sheets). * Access to a printer for printing spelling pages and story sheets. You will need a few sheets printed at the beginning of the course, and story sheets throughout. However, throughout the course, if you prefer to have 'digital copies' of the stories instead, please let me know. * If choosing paper stories, have a folder to keep the story sheets organized. * Index sized cards - as needed (for Beginning Level student flash cards only)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

All material will be virtual and sent as print downloads. You will also want to make flash cards of the words I send you to practice (if appropriate).
