Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - Kindergarten
This class is conducted 1:1 and is tailored to the needs and abilities of your learner. Focus is on gaining fluency in phonemic awareness, decoding, blending, comprehension, and morphology, using the time-tested, research-driven Orton Gillingham method.

For absolute beginners, we begin with learning the alphabet, short vowel sounds, and blending these to form CVC words. I help children use visual tools to represent sounds, as they begin to spell.

Orton-Gillingham instructs learners in the rules that govern spelling patterns, including:

- short vowel sounds
- CVC words
- blends
- digraphs
- long vowels with cvc-e patterns
- syllabication
- R-controlled vowels
- Latin and Greek spellings

Students will be presented with interactive, multi-sensory lessons that incorporate left-brain/ right-brain activities. The session will begin with a quick warm up activity and then review previously taught concepts by way of flashcards, reading passages, and dictation.

The students are encouraged to do regular practice sessions throughout the week, including both desk work, and gross motor activities that "cross the midline" and involve the whole body, especially for practice work at home. This means they will be assigned things that involve auditory, kinesthetic, tactile, and visual activities that will allow them to truly engage with the material.

Each tutoring session is designed for your child. After assessing the student, we will dive right in to where they need help the most, reinforcing those skills they already have, and building off them.
