Introduction to Sketchup 3D Modeling
In this 8h course (two-4h sessions), the student will learn fundamentals of 3D modeling in SketchUp. At completion, the student will possess an understanding of important aspects of SketchUp and will be able to turn ideas into 3D drawings!

Beginner Level
In this class, the student will learn how to configure the SketchUp environment and how to use many of the fundamental tools for 3D modeling in SketchUp. The topics in this course include: setting up SketchUp environment; how to view a model; creating a model with various drawing and solids tools; working with construction tools for precise drawing; utilizing modification tools; and working with groups and components. The teacher will guide the students through each of these topics, and will provide the student with several hands-on exercises during the course of each lecture, as well as a hands-on capstone project in the final lecture. The teacher will be present at all times to guide the student in the hands-on activities.

Setup, Drawing tools, and Modification tools
In Lesson 1, we will learn:
• How to configure the SketchUp environment: creating your own keyboard shortcuts, mouse setup
• Drawing Tools: Rectangle Tool (R), Line Tool (L), Circle Tool (C), Polygon Tool (Y), Arc Tool (A)
• Using the Paint Bucket to add colors and textures
• Modify Tools: Push/Pull (P), Offset (F), Follow Me (⇧F)
• Move Tools: Move (M), Rotate (Q), Scale (S)

Lesson 2:
Construction tools, Groups & Components, working with Solids
In Lesson 2, we will learn:
• Construction Tools: Tape Measure (T) and guides, Protractor, Axes
Views: Orbit (O), Hand (H), Zoom (Z), Zoom Window (⇧W), Zoom Extents (⇧Z)
• How to work with Groups and Components
• How to work with Solids
We will also complete a Capstone project.

Pre-Requisites
Required: the learner will need a computer running Windows 10/11 or MacOS 12+
Recommended: the learner should have a mouse with a scroll wheel.

I have been a FIRST Robotics mentor since 2008. I developed this Intro to SketchUp curriculum in 2010 to teach robotics students the tools needed to imagine and design a robot. I have since taught this course to dozens of high school students and adults.
