Class Experience
Over the course of two weeks, students will learn how to write for short films. Topics include: -building complex characters -screenplay format -story structure -how to create drama and suspense -how to critique -how to receive criticism -how to write diverse dialogue -world building -the value of table reads -how to pitch a story -archetypes The class will mainly be taught through lecture. Students will learn how to develop human characters, the function of relationships in storytelling, the three act structure, and how to create suspense. Students will learn to write in screenplay format on Celtx.com, a free website which includes industry standard script format. Writing is a very vulnerable process. I want students to be sensitive to this, but also learn how to take criticism. Both skills are vital in this industry. Students will learn how to pitch their ideas. This class should teach students to watch films differently. They should begin to analyze plot and characters.
Homework is assigned at the end of each class. By the end of the course, student will have submitted two unique scripts and pitched an additional story. They will receive thorough feedback on every assignment. Some assignments will be reviewed and critiqued in class. Homework should take about 45 minutes per class.
Students are encouraged to take notes during lecture. They will need to create create a free account on Celtx in order to complete the homework assignments. I will go over the website during the first class.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will receive thoughtful feedback on all submitted work. There are no formal grades for this course.
1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Course includes short films which include profanity. Student scripts reviewed in class may include profanity.
