What's included

1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Homework is optional, but encouraged. I will provide several resources, both online and downloadable file formats. I would encourage learners to review those materials to better solidify what was gone over in class.

Class Experience

We will quickly cover the history and evolution of D&D, then focus on the concepts of the game and basics of gameplay. We will then talk about the character sheet, challenge resolution, and touch on the role of the Dungeon Master. We will also discuss group dynamics and some of the things to look out for to avoid toxic groups and players. The class will be mostly discussion and following along as we discuss a few simple scenarios and cover basic rules. We will use the 5th Edition rules when talking about game mechanics. I'll introduce learners to some helpful online resources and quick reference materials (downloadable after registering for the class) to aid them in becoming more comfortable with the game and its mechanics. The goal is to get you familiar with the game, what it means to play your character, and being able to quickly start playing in a group.

This class is the first in my D&D series of classes.  The best order to take the classes is;
-Introduction to Dungeons & Dragons
-Dungeons & Dragons: Game Mechanics!
-Introduction to Dungeons & Dragons: Creating a Character!

Or, you can move on to one of my ongoing adventures;
Dungeons & Dragons Adventure: Into the Feywild!
Dungeons & Dragons Adventure: Defenders of Hope!
Dungeons & Dragons Adventure: Return of the Celestials!

There will be no tests. There is no previous experience necessary and no homework is required. By the end of this class, you should be able to build a character and have a general grasp of how the game is played. The class may be more or less interactive, depending on the experience of the learners.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the basic concepts of the game, basic game mechanics, how a character works and how to observe the social contract of D&D groups. The class is designed to give the learner enough information and familiarity to decide if they like the game and be able to join a group. Given the expansive rules set and detail, learning as they go will also be essential.

Parental Guidance
Though this is a fantasy game, there are elements of violence, combat and life and death. I won't be depicting these scenarios but bringing the possibility of these scenes to your attention if you are to play the game.
Supply List
No materials will be required, but the 5th Edition Players Handbook would be helpful. You can also go to www.dndbeyond.com and sign up for a free account. This will give you online access to the basic rules and the option to buy loads more content if you choose.

I've been playing D&D for over 40 years. I've played every edition and spent most of my time as the Dungeon Master. I've created entire worlds with dynamic backgrounds, illustrious characters, and exciting storylines. I think I have an excellent understanding of the game and how to get new players familiar with many aspects of the game to prepare them to have an excellent experience.
