Wings of Fire fans are passionate about this series! It activates creativity and imaginative thinking. We want to create our own characters and tell our own stories...and that's exactly what we're going to do! In this ongoing class we'll be working collaboratively to forge our own Dragon World, a world in which all kinds of dragons can unite. And inside of this Dragon World each student will create their own characters to role play as, interacting with other students characters or telling their own story alongside the rest of the class. Students will decide what kind of Dragon they are creating. The name, what they look like, their abilities, weaknesses, personality, backstory and more. We will have a Google Slides document that is accessible only by students in the class that is where they will create their characters. There is a slide template for them to use or they can get creative. I am able to help create slides for anyone who doesn't know how, but in my experience the students pick it up quickly and enjoy doing it by themselves. The roleplay will happen inside of a Nearpod collaboration board. At the beginning of class, students will open an additional website and go to join.nearpod.com. Each week at the beginning of class the teacher will give the students the Nearpod code to join live. New learners will be given a tour of the kingdom and introduced to the current story. They can choose to work on their character development during class or jump right in to role play and figure out their character as they go. Students are not required to have their camera on for the entire class (only when they first come on so we can meet them). (Often being on the Nearpod will automatically turn cameras off if the student is running the Nearpod and the Zoom on the same device). Students are encouraged to talk but I have many students in similar classes who interact heavily in the class through the collaboration board and choose not to speak. Students are welcomed and encouraged to share their original stories and original artwork.
Learning Goals
Students will naturally increase their story-telling abilities as we co-create stories about our dragons.
Students often increase their typing abilities as we are typing the stories into the Nearpod.
Students will work collaboratively to create stories together.
These are very social classes and many students form solid friendships within the classes over time.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Due to the nature of the Wings of Fire books there are often battle scenes and sometimes characters will die (it is always the choice of the student who controls the character whether their character gets hurt, how badly and if they die). I have also found that students in these classes like to make lots of different characters often playing with gender identities. Sometimes they create characters who have partners and children.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Sources
Most students will be familiar with the Wings of Fire book series but there are no specific books that need to be read.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been leading a Warrior Cat inspired role play on Outschool for the last year and a half. I have many students who have continued with the classes since day one. I have other students who have moved from one class to another, been in multiple at the same time or left and come back. This class has been created as a request by many of my Warrior Cat students. I have been reading the Wings of Fire books with my own children specifically to prepare for this class. We have a great time in these classes and I love reading the stories these kids create!
