**Introduction to Digital CAD Design with TinkerCAD** **Course Overview:** Welcome to your first adventure into the world of digital design and 3D modeling! In this exciting class, middle school students will embark on a journey to explore the basics of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) using TinkerCAD, a user-friendly online platform. This course is designed to ignite creativity, enhance problem-solving skills, and introduce students to the foundational concepts of 3D design and printing. Whether you're dreaming of owning a 3D printer, considering a career in engineering, or just curious about digital design, this class is your first step into a world where your ideas can become tangible creations. **Course Objectives:** - Understand the basic principles of CAD and 3D modeling. - Learn to navigate and utilize the TinkerCAD interface for design projects. - Create simple 3D models using basic shapes and tools in TinkerCAD. - Develop spatial awareness and design thinking skills. - Prepare for more advanced design projects and potential future use of 3D printers. **Requirements:** - Age Group: Middle School students (Typically ages 11-14). - Technical Needs: Access to a computer or laptop with reliable internet connectivity. Possibility of a dual screen setup. Why? Students will need to be able to see my instructions and at the same time create on their device. - Software: No prior installation required. TinkerCAD operates entirely online. - Pre-Class Preparation: Students should attempt to access TinkerCAD (https://www.tinkercad.com) and create an account before the class begins. No class code is required for account creation. **Class Structure:** **Introduction (15 minutes):** - Welcome and course overview. - Brief introduction to CAD and its significance in various fields including engineering, architecture, and design. - Overview of TinkerCAD as an educational tool for learning CAD basics. **Getting Started with TinkerCAD (20 minutes):** - Guided tour of the TinkerCAD interface. - Instructions on how to create a new design project. - Exploration of the different tools and shapes available in TinkerCAD. - Hands-on practice: Students will follow the instructor to create a simple object (e.g., a keychain, a nameplate, or a simple geometric shape). **Design Challenge (20 minutes):** - Students will be tasked with a design challenge that encourages creativity and application of the skills learned. - Possible project: Design your dream house model using basic shapes and tools in TinkerCAD. - Instructor provides tips and tricks for efficient design and problem-solving. **Show and Tell (5 minutes):** - Students have the opportunity to share their designs with the class. - A brief discussion on the designs, highlighting creative approaches and solutions to any challenges faced during the design process. **Wrap-Up and Future Pathways (10 minutes):** - Recap of the skills learned and discussion on how they can be applied to future projects. - Introduction to more complex design possibilities with TinkerCAD for students interested in advancing their skills. - Information on how 3D printing works and how designs created in TinkerCAD can be brought to life with a 3D printer. - Encouragement for students to explore engineering and design as a potential career path. **Conclusion:** This introductory class is designed to be an engaging and informative first step into the world of digital CAD design. By the end of the session, students will have a basic understanding of 3D modeling concepts and hands-on experience with TinkerCAD, setting the foundation for more complex design projects and possibly sparking a lifelong interest in engineering, design, or 3D printing.

Parental Guidance
Parents need to setup their student with a personal account on https://www.tinkercad.com/. They do not need a class code. I highly recommend setting up the class (Outschool Zoom) via a tablet-phone-or separate screen as this will help them to see my tutorial content and be able to manipulate their screens with ease. It is possible to do everything via one screen, but it will take more skill to do so.
Pre-Requisites
Beginner Computer Skills (Ability to navigate tabs, mouse usage, minimize/maximize screens)
Supply List
Pencil, Paper, a willing attitude to learn.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Texas Teaching Certificate in Mathematics
Bachelor's Degree in Science from University of Texas at San Antonio
I am so excited to bring my proven knowledge to your student via Outschool. My students have gone on to amazing colleges like Princeton, Yale, Cordell, West Point and Navy. Regardless, if college is in a students future, having a CAD background can be an enriching experience as it can help with STEM as well as Artistic endeavors.
