Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
During this course it is designed to focus on the basics of geometry for new learners or learners that need additional practice. This sections will include warm-ups practice, cumulative review warm-ups, classwork, quizzes, and extension problems. Focusing on points, parellel and perpendicular lines, planes, using midpoint and distance formulas, inductive/deductive reasonings, postulates, and geometric relationships. Students will also apply their prior mathematical knowledge to solve real world word problems. Students will have the opportunity to independently complete problems at the end and receive feedback from the teacher.

The topics are as follows:

Chapter 1- Basics of Geometry

Week 1: Points, Lines, and Planes and Constructing Segments
This week students will begin to familiarize themselves with the basic geometric terms of point, line, segment, ray, and plane. Students will be able to name points, lines, and rays. They will also be able to sketch intersections of lines, planes, and planes. Then, solving real-life problems involving lines and planes. This lesson will also introduce measuring and copying segments. The 2 postulates ruler postulate and segment addition postulate are confusing to students so there will be an emphasis between the 2 postulates.

Week 2: Using Midpoint and Distance Formulas
This lesson presents 2 forumulas that will be necessary in geometry. Students will find segment lengths using midpoint and distance formula.

Week 3: Perimeter and Area in the Coordinate Plane and Constructing Angles Pairs of Angles
This lesson builds on the previous lesson on finding perimeter and area of polygons in the coordinate plane. In addition, the names of polygons are reviewed and students need to classify the polygons as being convex or concave.

Week 4: Measuring and Contructing Angles
In this lesson, there should be content that students are familiar with such as how to name and measure angles. There are 2 postulates Protractor Postulate and Angle Addition Postulate in this lesson that might be confusing for students that will be emphasized as well. Students will also practice using a bisector to find angle measures.

Week 5: Describing Pairs of Angles
Students will learn the misconception on complementary and supplementary angles being adjacent. Students will be able to identify complementart and supplementary angles and linear pairs and vertical angles by using real-life applications.

Week 6: Chapter Review
Students will review key vocabulary, basic mathematical concepts, and their knowledge on anxiomatic systems.

Chapter 2: Quadrilaterals and Other Polygons

Week 7: Angles of Polygons
Students will be introduced to theorems for the sum of the interior angles and the sum of the exterior angles of a polygon. The interior and exterior angles of regular polygons will be discussed as well.

Week 8: Similar Polygons
Students will use similarity statements and find corresponding lengths in similar polygons.

Week 9: Properties of Parallelograms
This lesson uses properties to find side lengths and angles of parallelograms and parallelograms in the coordinate plane.

Week 10: Proving That a Quadrilateral is a Parallelogram
This lesson students will identify and verify parallelograms. There are 4 theorems in this lesson parallelograms opposite sides converse, parallelogram opposite angles converse, opposite sides parallel and congruent, and parallelogram diagonals converse.

Week 11: Properties of Special Parallelogram
This lesson is about special parallelograms: rectangles, rhombuses, and squares. The properties about the diagonals and opposite angles are presented as biconditional statements. Students will also learn how to use coordinate geometry to identify special types of parallelograms.

Week 12: Properties of Trapezoids and Kites
In this lesson, students will learn how to use properties of trapezoids and kites and the Trapezoid Midsegment Theorem to find distances.

Week 13: Chapter Review
Students will review the key concepts for this chapter.

Week 14: Test and Review
Students will complete a cumulative test from both chapters and review results with the teacher.

Learning Goals

Students will gain a strong understanding of high school geometry concepts.
