Class Experience
US Grade 9 - 10
In our tutoring sessions, the student asks questions to prepare for an upcoming assessment or to review previous skills in a safe environment. I will teach new topics (for example: trigonometry, proofs, transformations, properties of polygons, constructions, congruence, radians) if a student wants to get a head start on what’s coming next. Improving a student's executive function skills is intertwined with my mathematics tutoring. Suggestions for extra practice and a one-page guide on common challenges can be provided at the end of the session. Using guiding questions, providing immediate feedback, identifying logical patterns, and making connections to the real world increase the success of discovering gaps in a student’s math skills and mastering those along with new skills. My teaching philosophy is to meet students where they are in their knowledge and determine the best ways to empower them with life skills to build the futures they desire.
Learning Goals
Each student will improve individualized executive function skills to remember geometry theorems, postulates, and properties more efficiently. These life skills include smart note-taking, time and energy management, task initiation, motivation, and more.
Each student will become proficient in using a scientific calculator.
Other Details
Learning Needs
I have 20+ years of experience teaching (and parenting!) students with a Section 504 Plan (IAP) or Individual Education Program (IEP), gifted or twice-exceptional students, and students with ADHD, while maintaining high academic standards.
Parental Guidance
Every student is unique, and differences will be respected in a safe environment.
Pre-Requisites
Students should have successfully completed Algebra 1.
Supply List
The following supplies are recommended for successful mastery of skills: two notebooks (or binders of loose leaf paper), pencils, and colored pencils or pens. If a student does not have access to a handheld or digital calculator other than a smartphone, I will recommend a free online scientific calculator (includes sine, cos, tan). If a student is unable to write, accommodations will be made.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
