Imagine That!: Introduction to Youth Fantasy Fiction
In this 12 week course, students will experience the excitement and wonder of the fantasy fiction genre. They will learn the basics of this genre as well as important comprehension skills like understanding archetypes and foreshadowing.

In this 12 week course, students will embark on a fantastical reading journey with an experienced and engaging licensed teacher. We will learn strategies for how to understand the complex worlds of fantasy novels, using read aloud as well as student's own book choices. We will then move on to looking deeper into fantasy fiction to see the many hidden symbols and life lessons. In addition, students will get to discover and analyze a variety of archetypes that will help them in all future...
Students will understand the basics of the fantasy genre, including setting type, rules of the world, narrator vs character clues, symbolism, archetypes, themes and more! Students will improve their reading fluency and comprehension with read aloud, discussion and writing about reading Students will learn to engage in productive and interesting book discussions supported by text evidence. Students will track and record their substantive ideas about books.
Reading a few chapters of their book in between sessions and complete and unfinished classwork.
A fantasy fiction book of their choice. Some of my favorites include: Artemis Fowl, Land of Stories, Fablehaven, Alcatraz Vs the Evil Librarians, The Unwanteds, Cabinet of Wonders and Gregor the Overlander
Students will leave this course with a Fantasy Reader's Notebook full of informal, formative assessments, from written responses to games to graphic organizers.
