Assessment
Students are keenly aware of their peer's reactions to their work. They know when everyone is listening breathlessly. As they participate in the workshop they naturally want to read something other students will enjoy, so they naturally begin pushing themselves to write better work using the tools presented by the instructor in exercises. By the end of the workshop, their writing has reached a more sophisticated and challenging level.

Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
This class will involve creating a city that exists on another planet or in an alternative universe. Your learner will get to people their section of this remarkable city with interesting characters, monsters, unusual objects, and strange events.

The process:
Step 1: Each week students will receive a writing exercise that relates to a popular trope in science fiction and fantasy.
Step 2: When the 20 minute writing time is over, students will be given the option to read their work out loud to each other.
Step 3: Since we're discussing first drafts and haven't had a chance to edit it yet, the whole class will only comment on what we like and remember about the writing. We may also ask questions to help clarify the action in our minds, or find out if the author knows what will happen next.

This is the perfect class for students who have already taken a fiction writing course or are naturally strong writers--or both. Students who relish D&D or role playing will love this class.

Supply List
Students should have access to writing paper and pen for each workshop class. We want to put our inner critic away--it's too easy to erase words on the computer. Tip: have a folder on hand so you can put stories from the workshop together at the end of each day.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
