US Grade Kindergarten - 1
This class is an introduction to the digraph 'sh' which is one of the most common digraphs found in English words. Students will learn that a digraph is two letters that makes one sound. Students will learn to read larger words through a multi sensory approach that includes movement, blending and segmenting. First we will review our short vowel sounds and then we will blend and segment words with the digraph 'Sh' using fun, interactive and colourful Google Slides. We will then consolidate our learning through a fun game of I Spy words that begin with 'sh'. Learners will impress you by being able to read larger words by the end of this lesson. Learners must recognize all the letters of the alphabet and know the corresponding sounds. Students must have a good understanding of short vowels.
Learning Goals
The goal for students is to understand that digraphs make one when found in a word. They will learn how to segment and then blend words using the digraph 'sh' and short vowel sounds such as, ship.

Hello! My name is Teacher Sue. I graduated in 2002 with a Masters Degree in Education from Niagara University, in Niagara Falls, New York. I have earned a Specialist in Special education and a Specialist in Mathematics. I am currently working towards a Specialist in Primary Education. I have been formally trained in the Orton Gillingham approach. This approach is a direct, explicit, multi-sensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia.
I have been teaching elementary school for the last 20 years. I have taught all grades from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. However, I spent most of my classroom teaching in the primary grades. During the last 5 years of my teaching career I have been a Learning Resource Teachers. In this role I am responsible for working with neurodiverse students in small groups to help them improve reading, writing, mathematics and communication skills. I am also responsible for helping teachers create Individual Education Plans that help to meet the needs of neurodiverse students in the classroom. I work alongside parents to ensure that their child's education goals are being accomplished.
I believe that all children can achieve success in education. My goal is to build a child's confidence so that they take risks in their learning while having fun. Please join me in my classroom.
