Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
Phonemic awareness is the single most important predictor of reading proficiency. A well-developed understanding of how to play with the sounds of words is the best way to ensure that your child will become a good reader as they move through the primary school years This class is designed to help develop a child's phonemic and phonetic awareness so that they can learn how to blend words together when reading. In this class, students will use their ears to listen to make letter sounds and blends and they will use hand motions to connect the sounds to movement. Each week will follow the same routine with different words and sounds. After the phonemic awareness activities, students will be introduced to a new phonetic concept through segmenting and blending sounds. I am an Orton Gillingham-trained teacher and I am skilled at teaching students who are Neurodivergent so all learners are welcome.
*Please note this class is intended for struggling readers however, all emergent readers will benefit from these lessons. All learners are welcome!
The routine will look like this:

Blending Words
We put two small words together to
make one big word

Phoneme Isolation
We will listen for the last sound we hear in
words. The last sound comes at the end of a
word.

Segmenting Into Words
We will segment the big words we blended
into two smaller words.

Adding Words
We will add to the end of a
word to make a compound word.

Deleting Words
We will delete or take away
from the words, we just heard.

Substituting Words
We can change part of a word
to make a new word

Alphabet Knowledge
We will practice saying just
the name of each letter, and then we will say just
the sound each letter makes
Learning Goals
Students will develop their phonemic awareness and phonetic understanding which will improve their ability to blend words together.

Hello! My name is Teacher Sue. I graduated in 2002 with a Masters Degree in Education from Niagara University, in Niagara Falls, New York. I have earned a Specialist in Special education and a Specialist in Mathematics. I am currently working towards a Specialist in Primary Education. I have been formally trained in the Orton Gillingham approach. This approach is a direct, explicit, multi-sensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia.

I have been teaching elementary school for the last 20 years. I have taught all grades from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. However, I spent most of my classroom teaching in the primary grades. During the last 5 years of my teaching career I have been a Learning Resource Teachers. In this role I am responsible for working with neurodiverse students in small groups to help them improve reading, writing, mathematics and communication skills. I am also responsible for helping teachers create Individual Education Plans that help to meet the needs of neurodiverse students in the classroom. I work alongside parents to ensure that their child's education goals are being accomplished.

I believe that all children can achieve success in education. My goal is to build a child's confidence so that they take risks in their learning while having fun. Please join me in my classroom.
