Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Beginner Level
I will begin class by reading the story How to Catch an Elf by Adam Wallace. During the reading we will discuss the following
~ who the author is and what an author does
~ who the characters are and what is a character
~ where is the setting and what is a setting
~ I will ask students to make a hypothesis about what might happen next during the story
~ at the end I will ask students about what happened in the story to check reading comprehension.

After the story we will complete the story map worksheet. Students will have to list the characters, setting, problem, and solution of the story. We will do this together. Students will need something to write with.

Next we will do a writing activity called "If I were an Elf." In this activity students will finish the sentence based on the story.

Once we have finished going over the worksheet. I will allow time for students to create their own trap for catching an elf. Students will draw their design for their trap as well as list materials they would need for their trap (worksheet). If they do not finish this assignment it is ok they can finish on their own.

We will end class by sharing a couple of designs of those who wish to share.

*There is a bonus worksheet included if they wish to complete the word search.
