US Grade 9 - 11
Welcome to your exciting journey into the world of chemistry! This first-semester chemistry course is designed to provide learners with a solid foundation in the fundamental principles of chemistry. Throughout this course, learners will explore a diverse range of topics, from understanding the basic units of measurement to unraveling the mysteries of atomic structure and chemical bonding. Each week will be comprised of three pre-recorded videos along with challenges and practice opportunities Here's a sneak peek at what you'll be learning: Week 1- Measurements and the SI System: Learners will gain proficiency in measurement techniques and become fluent in the International System of Units (SI) for accurate and consistent scientific measurements. Scientific Notation and Significant Figures: Learners will explore how to express large and small numbers efficiently using scientific notation, a crucial skill in the world of science, and understand the importance of significant figures in precision measurement and how to apply them in scientific calculations. Matter and its Composition: Learners will explore the concept of matter, its properties, and the different states of matter, including solids, liquids, and gases. Week 2- Atoms: Learners will journey into the heart of the matter by dissecting the structure of atoms, including subatomic particles and their significance. The Periodic Table: Learners will navigate the Periodic Table to uncover the organization of elements and their properties. Learners will also Investigate how elements vary across the Periodic Table in terms of atomic size, electronegativity, and ionization energy Electron Configurations: Learners will decode the electronic structure of atoms and understand how it influences their chemical behavior. Week 3- Chemical Bonds: Learners will dive into the world of chemical bonding, exploring ionic and covalent that hold substances together. Writing Chemical Formulas: Learners will master the art of representing compounds through chemical formulas, an essential skill for any chemist. Naming Compounds: Learners will dive into the rules and conventions for naming various types of chemical compounds, ensuring clear and precise communication. Week 4-Chemical Reactions: Learners will explore the different types of chemical reactions, from synthesis to combustion, and understand the principles that govern them. Stoichiometry: Learners will develop proficiency in balancing chemical equations and performing stoichiometric calculations to predict reactant and product quantities. This course is not only about gaining knowledge but also about developing critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a deep appreciation for the world of chemistry. Through engaging pre-recorded videos, hands-on experiments, and practice done through Nearpod and Kahoot, Learners will embark on a rewarding learning journey that prepares them to uncover the wonders of chemistry and ignite their passion for scientific exploration!
