Class Experience

***If the listed sessions do not work for your student's schedule, please message me: I'm happy to collectively find a time that does work.***

I believe that all students have the ability to succeed in the English classroom. There are dozens of techniques, acronyms, and strategies that are used to help students grow in their reading and writing, but I believe that the greatest tool of all is a trusting and encouraging relationship with students. Books, tools, and pedagogy mean very little to them: they care about whether they are being heard, seen, and acknowledged. I firmly believe that by getting to know a student and helping them grow in their self-confidence (and teaching them an acronym or two), students will find the courage and ability to grow in those pesky skills that have always been a challenge for them. In this one-on-one tutorial course, your student will be given a safe space to struggle, grow, and ask questions.

This course is for a minimum of four tutoring sessions for the sake of continuity; if students want to continue after the initial four weeks, another bundle can be purchased.

The first session will be a "get to know you" session so that I can gauge how best to help your student moving forward. They may be asked to read, write, or complete a quiz during this session, based on their specific ELA struggles. We will also discuss what they hope to focus on during our sessions and create goals. The more we cover this in the first session, the less time is wasted in future sessions.
Future sessions will be tailored to their specific academic needs.
Tutorial sessions will be a mix of my own lessons and walking your student through their specific curriculum, as needed.

The following topics are the ones I feel most comfortable covering in my tutorial sessions, but feel free to reach out to me if there is something else that your student needs help with related to the ELA category:
-Reading improvement
-Literary Analysis
-Reading comprehension
-Study skills
-Sentence, paragraph, and essay writing
-Grammar
-Punctuation
-9th/10th grade English
-Shakespeare
-British Literature: specifically help with Chaucer and other medieval literature (my specialty in college)
-Poetry
-College Essays
-Personal novel writing/editing
-Non-fiction analysis
-Conversation or discourse skills

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been a high school English teacher in the physical classroom for nearly four years. I am certified to teach English Language Arts grades 7-12, and I minored in English. I absolutely love teaching, and more importantly, I love seeing students succeed. While most teachers at my school hated tutorial times, they were always my favorite time of the day because I truly got to know the students I was teaching. I believe that building a relationship of mutual trust and respect is key to getting high schoolers to buy-in to their own learning. I treat students like mini-adults, and while I provide them with the tools to grow in their reading and writing, I also help them feel seen, heard, and confident. I truly believe that all students have the ability to enjoy reading and literature if they understand the most basic components, and I love tailoring learning so that students can feel excited about it. I'd love the opportunity to help your student make those connections and grow in their confidence of reading, writing, and critical thinking. Please message me if you have any questions!
