Class experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner - Advanced Level
This class is taught in English.
I have taught LGBTQ Studies, History, and Culture in brick and mortar schools as well as on online school for many years. I have also been an advisor to a GSA group before too. I have seen first hand how this club helps LGBTQ and Straight students form bonds, transform shy people to more confident people, and create an accepting, good understanding, and loving climate with one another while championing a common cause: education and advocacy. I have also received training as a GSA Advisor from the national GSA Network.

I am active in the Human Rights Campaign, Equality Florida, and teach an LGBTQ course here on Outschool. I am also a member of the LGBTQ Community myself. As a Social Studies teacher for a few decades, I realize just how important it is to not only talk about LGBTQ issues but also study, interpret, and understand them. I have a bachelor's in Social Sciences, a Master's in Education with Curriculum Development, and a Doctorate in Philosophy.

These rules are here to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all members. Your cooperation and understanding are greatly appreciated. 1. πŸ”› Name Consistency: For Zoom safety and compliance with Outschool's policies, please maintain the same name on Zoom as on your Outschool account. You may change your name on Zoom to your preferred name and add your pronouns in parentheses after being admitted. You can update your name and pronouns in your Outschool Learner Profile for them to reflect on Zoom. 2. πŸ˜‡ Kindness and Respect: Let's maintain a positive and supportive atmosphere. We are a social and educational group, so please keep social conversations uplifting and be supportive of one another. 3. πŸŽ₯ Camera On: Unless you've been pre-approved by Outschool Support to keep your camera off, please keep your camera on. Avoid using Zoom's background feature for safety reasons. 4. 🎀 Microphone Etiquette: Mute your microphone when the student president, a fellow classmate, or I are speaking. This prevents background noise during the meeting and while watching videos. 5. πŸ—£ Speaking During Discussions: During topic discussions in live meetings, please wait to be called upon by the student president or me. If it's a general question or statement, raise your hand in front of your camera to speak, helping maintain an organized conversation. 6. πŸ‘₯️ Social Time: We'll have social time during the meeting, allowing you to chat with your peers in breakout rooms. Please wait for an announcement from the student president or teacher. In breakout rooms, refrain from discussing topics like arson, weapons, war, violence, or anything inappropriate. Breaking this rule may lead to ejection from the meeting and parental notification. Let's keep social conversations positive and supportive to ensure everyone's comfort. 7. ⛔️ Parent Participation: Parents, please remember not to be on camera or speak during live meetings per Outschool's policies. 8. πŸ€— Safe Space: This is a safe space for all students to engage in positive conversations, offer support, and enjoy socializing. In breakout rooms during social time, there's a "Help" button for immediate teacher assistance if needed. 9. πŸ™‹πŸ½β€β™€οΈ Attendance Policy: Please note that if you miss three consecutive live meetings, the platform will automatically withdraw you. Given the club's popularity, re-enrollment may not be guaranteed. 10. 🚫 Zero Tolerance for Hate: Hate speech, disrespect, rudeness, name-calling, derogatory comments, and hateful opinions are strictly prohibited. Any member found in violation of these rules may be temporarily removed from the meeting and reported to Outschool's Trust & Safety Department. We all appreciate your efforts in making this a safe, fun, and inclusive club. 🏫 OUTSCHOOL TEEN CODE OF CONDUCT: These guidelines ensure a productive and respectful learning environment: 1. ⏰️ Be on time and prepared for class. 2. πŸ‘•πŸ‘– Dress appropriately to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all participants. 3. πŸ™‚ Treat the teacher and your classmates with respect. 4. ⚠️ Actively participate, stay on topic, and minimize distractions. 5. 🀩 Contribute to a welcoming class environment for learners and teachers from diverse backgrounds. 6. 🚫 Keep personal information private and avoid asking others to share personal details. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ NATIONAL GSA NETWORK GUIDELINES πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ: See link: https://www.glsen.org/sites/default/files/2020-04/guideline%20for%20discussions.pdf πŸ€” EXPECTATIONS: 1. πŸ™Œ Join us for our live video meetings. We deeply value our straight allies and embrace them with open arms. However, we request that teen allies be "strong allies," meaning they are well-informed, caring, and fully accepting of the LGBTQ+ community, to ensure a safe space.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
πŸ’° **Club Cost:**

The $20 weekly fee for this GSA Club is allocated as $10.00 per live meeting (one hour). We gather for one hour on Mondays and one hour and fifteen minutes on Thursdays. In addition, there's the weekly classroom chat thread, ongoing planning, and responses to private messages. Please note that Outschool deducts a 30% fee for maintaining the platform. 🌟 The extra 15 minutes on Thursdays is provided as a complimentary bonus 😊! Sometimes, but not often, a club meeting may be shortened or canceled, which is a very rare occurrence, and I take the liberty of using some of those free, weekly 15 minutes from past meetings as make-up time for such events.

🚫 **Recordings Are Not Shared:

To safeguard the identity and safety of our teen club members, I do not share the Outschool recordings of live meetings with anyone. Only the Outschool Trust & Safety department and I have access to these recordings. This practice aligns with each teacher's discretion on Outschool.

πŸ’Ÿ **Open Mind & Open Heart**

High school students joining this class should possess a level of maturity, an open mind, and a desire to learn. We cover a range of LGBTQ+ topics, including gender identity, sexual orientation, sexual expression, transgender issues, LGBTQ+ history, sexuality, politics, and more. Please be prepared for discussions on a wide array of topics, including some light adult language, as we explore LGBTQ+ history modern times, and its impact on society.

πŸ”„ **Breakout Rooms:**

After our main meetings, we use Zoom breakout rooms for a part of the "social time" of the club. These rooms allow students to socialize in smaller groups. I monitor each breakout room, rotating through them every one to two minutes to ensure Outschool and club rules are followed. The "Help" button is available in each breakout room for immediate teacher assistance. Please be aware that Zoom does not record breakout room sessions, and this is beyond the teacher's control.

πŸ€— **Inclusive Space:**

This class is open to all students regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or identity, as long as mutual respect is maintained. Hate speech is strictly prohibited, as this is a safe space for all.

I'm always open to comments, suggestions, and modifications during the course of the class. Feel free to have a conversation with your student and reach out to me through private direct messaging on Outschool. We can discuss your comments, concerns, and suggestions to best meet your student's needs.

**⚠️ Special Note:**

If a student misses three consecutive live meetings, the Outschool platform will unenroll them automatically. Unfortunately, I have no control over this process. In such cases, you will need to enroll your student again as a new student, provided there's an available spot.

You can find more information about GSA using this link: https://gsanetwork.org/

πŸ’΅ **Refund Policy:**

The pricing is weekly and charged every Sunday for the following week. For ongoing classes, the standard refund policy is as follows: "Cancel subscription at any point, no refund for past subscriptions. Payments can be refunded within 24 hours of purchase." To unsubscribe and avoid further charges, you must do so before the following Sunday. Please be aware that if a student misses three consecutive live meetings in a row, the Outschool system automatically withdraws them from the class. Unfortunately, I cannot guarantee their spot if this happens, as the teacher has no control over this subscription policy. Transfers and refunds are not available. Our weeks start on Thursdays and end on Wednesdays.

πŸ“ **Note:**

This club requires a minimum of ten students to begin and continue through the ongoing subscription. If there are fewer than ten enrolled teens in the club at any time throughout this weekly ongoing class, it may need to be concluded earlier than the final meeting date, and no further charges will be applied.

FROM OUTSCHOOL...

We stand with learners. We are all learners.

At Outschool, we commit to standing with all learners by fostering a diverse and multicultural community, where differences are honored, welcomed, and accepted. With education as the catalyst and technology as the tool, we are uniquely positioned to connect learners to experiences that broaden their understanding of themselves and the world around them through our collective love for learning.

At Outschool, we strive to be OUTstanding by fostering a global online community, elevating unique voices, and transforming the way we work and learn.

At Outschool, we are all learners. We are curious and continuously interrogate the inequities created by systemic oppression on education and learning. We have the opportunity to evolve education by creating a marketplace that reflects and respects the lived experiences of historically ignored communities.

This work is never done. To ensure equity across multiple lines of difference and experiences, we maintain a bias toward transformative action.

Here’s what action looks like for Outschool.

Diversity
We intentionally include fair representation of different social identities–including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, social class, physical ability or attributes, and learning needs.

Equity
We implement processes to ensure inclusion and procedures to eliminate barriers or imbalances that keep community members from having equal opportunities.

Inclusion
Outschool cultivates an environment where all individuals feel welcomed, supported, and valued.

Belonging
We create a sense of connection through meaningful experiences by connecting people, ideas, and resources.
