Class Experience

  • Learners will practice social skills, learn and share new games while making new social connections.
Carly has been running inclusive and supportive social groups for kids for over 10 years. With her Bachelor's of Child and Youth Care, with early childhood education specialization from the University of Victoria, she has years of experience coaching the anatomy of conversation and is constantly learning about humans. Carly coaches all of instructors in the methodology of this class to provide consistency.

Yvonne is a musician with a BMus from McGill University who has been leading social groups on Outschool with Carly since August 2022. Linda is a talented art instructor and has been facilitating group learning for many years. Mavi joined us in 2023 as a social group host and is developing her skills as a tutor of the Orton-Gillingham reading/writing approach. We believe in inclusive social groups were we get the chance to interact and learn more about each other.

We are cool with awkward moments and silence. Growth happens in discomfort. We leave space for connection. We do make sure everyone gets a turn to speak, keep things safe, and as much as possible, we try to stay out of the way.

This is a learner driven class. They are getting to know new people. We are curious about the subjects learners bring up in class that we don't know about, but we know enough to back off if the group is connecting over something that we've never heard of. They aren't here for another adult perspective.

We see their strengths. Every person has value to offer and we are passionate about making an open space for learners to share and connect.

We laugh at all the jokes 😉
We are a Neuroaffirming Organization! We support learners with different needs and meet them where they are at. In our social groups, we can read out the chat, we can scribe and we keep the class together and don't use breakout rooms.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
This is a facilitated, not an instructional class. There is no content on "How to" make friends. This is a social space where learners are encouraged to share things that are important or interesting to them. Practice is the best learning.

We are neuroaffirming and trauma informed. We respect neurodivergent communication styles. We do not provide therapeutic support.

Learners are invited to co-create our meetings. Bring your ideas and passions to class. This group is trauma informed. That means we don't play around with potentially traumatic topics including murder and violence. All topics are welcome for discussion but trauma will not be our party theme. This includes murder mystery games. Thanks for understanding this effort to provide a safe space (in a short time) for all.

Occasionally we use external websites to play games.

This class is designed and delivered to support learners in achieving a high school diploma. By engaging in communications studies using an online platform, learners can engage with audiences and cultures that they may not otherwise be able to access. The online classroom enhances the learner’s opportunities to consider diverse perspectives, acquire information and present information for many purposes and audiences. The following are examples of competencies that are developed and supported in this classroom.

Connecting and engaging with others
Focusing on intent and purpose
Students communicate with intention and purpose.
Acquiring and presenting information

- From BC’s curriculum/ BC Ministry of Education for K-12. Please ask us if you’d like detailed competencies based on your learner.
