This ongoing Minecraft Java class is mainly for teenagers who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, gender-nonbinary, pansexual, and any other student under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella to play Minecraft in an environment that is inclusive of them as oftentimes gaming communities exclude members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Each week we will play modded Minecraft: Java Edition. The current mods for the class add towns and little monsters that the students can control. Students will play on my private server that will open at the start of class and shut down at the end of class. Please see technical requirements below. Technical Requirements -a purchased version of Minecraft Java Edition for PC/Mac -CurseForge (Please see the parental guidance section for more information) -computer with at least 8GB of RAM -be able to stay connected to Zoom and Minecraft during the class (some students may need two devices to do this) Student Ability -able to read and type (sometimes we may have to write in-game commands) -at least some beginner experience playing Minecraft: Java Edition As we play Minecraft, we will talk about things happening in the game and sometimes we might talk about things taking place in our lives. The conversation will flow freely as long as it remains class-appropriate. My teaching style is conversational. I like for students to feel free to ask each other questions and to ask me questions. I try to teach my classes from the most intersectional perspective possible, keeping in mind Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, social classes, ability, sexuality, gender identity, etc. The course schedule is as follows: Week of Sept 3rd - Play survival mode in our modded Minecraft world Week of Sept 10th- Play survival mode in our modded Minecraft world Week of Sept 17th - Play survival mode in our modded Minecraft world Week of Sept 24th- Play survival mode in our modded Minecraft world Upon enrollment, the welcome email to the class will include the installation guide and our modpack. If there are any technical issues, please message me well in advance so that I can try to assist prior to class. I do not like to do troubleshooting (besides minor issues) during class, because it takes away very valuable time from other learners.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Swearing: Some learners may use swear words when talking.
Racism, Religion, and Politics: Some learners may mention these topics as they intersect with their identity as an LGBTQIA+ person. If this topic comes up, it will always be framed in the context of how the student presents it as long as it does not go against the existence of other marginalized members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Discrimination and Hate Crimes: Some learners may mention these topics when talking about about their experience or another LGBTQIA+ person.
Mental Health: Some students may mention suicide, depression, and other mental health matters while talking freely in class about their experience as an LGBTQIA+ person. If students share that they are having mental health concerns personally, I will encourage them to seek out an adult in their personal life that they can trust since I am not a certified counselor and I will message their parent and Outschool Safety.
Sex Work- Some students might mention sex work when discussing some famous or influential LGBTQIA+ individuals. When discussions of sex work come up, I will treat it as a job that some people had to do to survive while also recognizing that some people choose this career.
CurseForge- this program is a pre-launcher. You tell this program which mod you want to play and it will gather the necessary files to launch the correct version of modded Minecraft. This program also provides easy access to mod files for users.
Death- A learners in-game character may die during gameplay from either monsters, other players, natural hazards, etc.
