Class Experience

This two-week course will cover several concepts, including multiplication, division, fractions, and place value, including decimal place value. We will represent, compare, and order numbers from 0.01 to 1,000,000.

Students will learn and practice the skill of decomposing/breaking apart whole numbers into tenths and hundredths and representing those numbers using both fractions and decimals. We will also work on multiplication and division and discuss how those operations relate to the previously-mentioned concepts.

Students will develop their mathematical vocabulary as well as their conceptual understanding of the material through games, discussions, demonstrations, and practice activities.

Each session lasts 20 minutes, and, at the most, there will be 2 - 5 students in the class.

The course will be focused on the vocabulary and mathematical concepts that upper elementary and middle school students tend to struggle with. These include:
- place value
- decimals (tenths and hundredths)
- fractions and mixed numbers (as well as how to simplify them)
- percentages
- understanding and using a number line
- multiplication of one-digit and two-digit numbers
- division
- integration of word problems (writing and solving)

We will use base 10 blocks and similar visuals to model decimals, fractions, mixed numbers, whole numbers, and percentages. We will also review and practice various strategies for composing and decomposing numbers. This will increase mathematical fluency in a variety of areas. As students progress, they will begin to write their own story problems related to the concepts covered in this course.

These strategies will greatly improve students ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with fluency. It will also enhance their understanding of numbers in general, making math so much easier for them!

I am a certified bilingual professional with international experience and a passion for working with all learners, especially those learning English or Spanish as a second language.  I have worked as a dual language elementary school educator in both one-way and two-way immersion programs.  I am so proud of not only the linguistic skills that both my native English-speaking and native Spanish-speaking students have acquired, but also the positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors they have developed!  

I have taught children as young as three years old, and adults of all ages.  I find something special about each age.  I have over ten years of experience as a full-time, bilingual elementary school teacher, and began my online teaching adventure in 2017.  I have experience teaching math, language arts, social studies, and science at the elementary school level.  I also teach Spanish, English as a foreign or second language, and mindfulness courses.  I have so much fun connecting with people from all over the world, and I feel so grateful to be an educator!  I love learning and hope to share that love of learning with my current and future students!
