Class Experience

In this pre-recorded FLEX class, the goal is to foster in students a love of writing while developing critical writing and communication skills through creative writing. Please note that this is a FLEX class and there are no live meetings, although the instructor does communicate with the students through messages, feedback on work, and classroom postings.

Each week, students will watch an engaging video, complete the in-video exercises, and then submit their assignment to the instructor for feedback. During the week, the instructor will communicate with the students in the Classroom by posting activities and questions designed to encourage communication and interaction among the students.

WEEK 1: Ever heard of encomiums and invectives? How about likes and dislikes? This writing project comes straight from ancient Greece... with a twist! While an encomium praises someone or something, an encomium condemns something. But in this class, you'll have to compose an encomium and an invective about the same item! That is a true test of your persuasive writing skills. What will you write about? Spiders? Ice cream? People who talk too much? Whatever it is, you'll have to both love and hate them!

WEEK 2: Hi. Hello. What's up? How are you today? Have you ever considered how many ways we can greet someone, from formal to informal? Well, we can apply this same rule to just about any kind of writing. You won't talk or write the same way to the Queen of England as you do to your little brother, certainly! In this class, we will examine the concept of diction, which is what you say and how you say. We'll have fun worksheets to brainstorm different styles of diction as well as a cool writing project that will bring out your inner royalty... as well as other personalities!

WEEK 3: I have a story to tell you.... come closer... that's right... here it is: I have two heads. Don't believe me? Good, you shouldn't. However, once I lie to you, it calls everything I say into question. I become an unreliable narrator, which we see in various types of fiction. Using an unreliable narrator keeps your reader on their toes, whether it's through outright lies, exaggerations, or being open about deliberately cruel actions. And... it's a lot of fun to become unreliable in your story!

WEEK 4: Enjamb-what? Enjambment! This is an easy concept -- when a line of poetry breaks but isn't meant to stop. These days, we are seeing it quite often in books written in poetry rather than prose, like Kwame Alexander's "Crossover" and Patricia Reilly Giff's "A Slip of a Girl." So we will tell our own stories in this same manner. The great thing: There are no rules!

Each video-based class begins with a warm-up activity, followed by three vocabulary words that students should try to integrate into their assignment. Then, the instructor introduces the literary device for that class and gives students opportunities to practice it creatively. All activities lead up to the final assignment, and the instructor gives examples every step of the way.

Because learner interaction is an integral part of a FLEX class, interaction between learners and the instructor will occur in the following ways:

1) Students are encouraged to post their weekly assignments in the Classroom and to constructively comment on their classmates' work.

2) Mid-week activities that encourage interaction, such as Nearpod games, a quizlet (updated weekly) that uses the vocabulary words, and instructor posts that challenge students to write and think creatively.
