Class Experience

This is the first part of a two part class. Buy the second part here.

Have you ever been inspired by the sight of a falcon or eagle soaring in the sky? Have you ever wondered how falconers train birds of prey to fly free and come back? Have you ever dreamt of becoming a falconer and training your own falcon or hawk?

Our falconry class offers in-depth look into the oldest field sport in human history.
Join us on a one of a kind journey, covering human history and culture, biology, geology art and philosophy.

This course is designed to not only teach you about falconry, but also prepares you to become a falconer if you are interested in getting your license.

Falconry is not merely keeping an exotic pet. It requires knowledge of the birds themselves, knowledge of training techniques and specialized falconry equipment that has been fine-tuned over the past 5,000 years.

Topics Covered
How the crusades and the Renaissance permanently changed the way falconry is practiced today
Training and upkeep of individual falcons, hawks, and owls in captivity
How they hunt in the wild
Biology
Follow the training and upkeep of individual falcons, hawks ad owls in captivity
Learn how they are trained to fly free, hunt in the wild, and still return to the falconer
Review falconry equipment
Learn the specifics of how and why certain equipment is used
How to keep a bird happy and healthy
Legal requirements for keeping a bird of prey

We will be reading "My Side of the Mountain" by Jean Craighead George.

The class will be held over zoom meetings and we will send you the link. There will be reading homework every week. No background knowledge is required. Learner progress is evaluated through discussion and study of this incredible sport.

This class contains an entire self-paced class as well as group mentoring each week for the Fall semester.
