Class Experience

This class is all about the foundational principles and elements that make up visual art. That's right! Just like nature is made up of elements - fire, earth, air, and water - art is built from elements of its own. These allow us to not only create art but also help us understand everything that we see. Are you curious to know what the elements are? Let's look! There are seven main ones - Line, Shape, and Form work together so you can see (and create!) objects. Value, Texture, and Color have their own roles working within objects to give them their finer characteristics. And last, but far from least, we have Space - this is where your objects exist!

I'm excited to learn more about the elements and put them into practice as we draw, paint, and color! Are you? This ongoing class will allow you to do just that. Each week we will explore a new element and create unique artwork applying the knowledge we gain. We will start class getting to know each other, our supplies, and our element of the week. Once we are all acquainted, we will work together on warm-up exercises to understand our day's element even more. And finally, the best part and the majority of the class will be dedicated to you creating your very own and unique artwork by applying your new knowledge. There will be examples for inspiration and your art guide (that's me!) will be available for any degree of guidance you want.

No experience is needed and each meeting can be a stand-alone class. Be sure to have art supplies ready for these interactive lessons. Throughout every class, your art guide will be on camera and will also be sharing a secondary screen for art demonstration and viewing example artwork. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions, comments, concerns, or requests for different meeting times. I'd love to hear from you. If you see a topic listed below that you'd love to do but the week doesn't work for you, I may be able to offer it as a one-time class during a different week.

For each week, we will draw and color a picture as described by the topics listed. Though each artwork will intrinsically use multiple elements of art, we will focus our discussion and learning on the corresponding theme listed.

Hello everyone!
If you see a class you like but the time doesn't work, I'm happy to work with your schedule. Even if you are in a different time zone or my automatic availability isn't open at a certain time, reach out and there is a good chance I can make something work for you.

A bit about me and my teaching style:
I am passionate about art and creativity. Even more so, I love to inspire that in others. It's not about talent or skills you were born with, it's all about expressing yourself and growing your talent through practice and guidance. I believe everyone has the ability to create masterpieces and should have the freedom to find their own way of making them. I teach with a step-by-step demonstration approach while encouraging students to do it their own way whenever they feel ready to do so. This approach allows for wonderfully blended classes where the less experienced or shy learners can follow along with me and the bolder ones can work in their own way alongside us. Either way, we all end up with unique art we can be proud of and improved knowledge about the art/craft process we are practicing.

My classes are designed to be highly interactive and engaging with questions & answers throughout as well as hands-on activities. Be sure to check the supply list for each class because learners get the best experience when they are ready to learn with every material needed for the class.

In addition to my bachelor's degree in biology, I have a Graphic Arts certificate which I earned from Autry Technology Center. I earned 1st place in state (Oklahoma) and 6th nationally in the 2001 National Skills USA Championship competition in graphic communications. I teach the arts of drawing and painting to adults online on a voluntary basis. I also teach arts and crafts to children as a professional online and as a volunteer in person.
I have over 3 years of online teaching experience with students 4-17 years old. I have also worked with children in person in a variety of settings from my current position as a children's church leader to volunteering in afterschool care for at-risk children.
