Students will be challenged to engineer a paper bridge, using only the materials listed below. Once the bridge is create one book or magazine will be added to the top of the bridge to test the strength. The class will begin by reviewing the engineering process. The egg drop engineering class, "Egg-cellent Engineering Challenge," is extremely popular among my Outschool students. They have been asking for more engineering challenge classes. This class provides students with a new challenge using their creativity, problem solving, and engineering skills.
4 sheets of 8 1/2 by 11 notebook paper or printer paper (Please no card stock or thick paper) Scotch tape (Example: clear wrapping paper tape) Dark writing utensils (marker, dark crayon) 1 sheet of blank paper to draw bridge plan design Multiple magazine, paperback books, or soft cover chapter books to put on the bridge to test the strength (The same size books or magazines will make it easiest to stack on the bridge) Scissors
Students will need a flat hard surface to work on and build their bridge. They will also need multiple books or magazines to test the weight of their structure. Safety First! Guidelines for All Classes (For Parents and Students) - Work under the supervision of an adult at home - All materials are to be used carefully and with caution - Clean up and properly dispose of materials after class - Wash your hands =) All activities in Ms. Sarah’s classes are to be done under the supervision of an adult, who is responsible for the safety of the student.
