Class Experience

Students will be challenged to design and create a package or container to prevent a raw egg from breaking when dropped. The class will begin with a student connection question and the challenge presented. Next, the teacher will introduce the Engineering Design process that engineers use to solve problems. Students will brainstorm multiple ideas from the materials they have gathered. Next, students will choose their best idea, plan their design, and construct it. Students will put their design to the test by dropping the package with a raw egg. Finally, students will reflect on the challenge and their design created.

Learning Goals

Students will learn:
~ Problem Solving
~ Apply the Engineering Design Process

Parental Guidance
Safety First! Guidelines for All Classes (For Parents and Students) - Work under the supervision of an adult at home - All materials are to be used carefully and with caution - Clean up and properly dispose of materials after class - Wash your hands =) All activities in Ms. Sarah’s classes are to be done under the supervision of an adult, who is responsible for the safety of the student. Ms. Sarah is not responsible for any injuries or accidents resulted in class. The class is designed for students to drop their egg while standing. Students will drop a raw egg inside a plastic bag. To help prevent a mess the egg will be put in a gallon zip lock plastic bag and taped at the top. Students need an area where they can perform the egg drop. In case the plastic bag breaks, the drop should be performed over a floor where a mess could easily be cleaned up after class. For example, the teacher will be dropping her egg on a floor with newspaper covering it.
