Class Experience

Currently there are nearly 800 endangered species in the United States. What does "endangered species" mean? What are "threatened" species? The Endangered Species Act of 1973 is designed to protect and recover species that are close to extinction due to human activity. We will go through all the states one by one, and discover which species are endangered and threatened in each one and why. We will take a closer look at the process of how endangerment is determined, and by whom. We will look at state and federal resources available that are in place to support and strengthen these species, and occasionally compare to mechanisms in other countries. We'll also get to know some individuals and non-profits in each state that are working hard on the ground to restore our beautiful planet. This is a discussion heavy class, like all my classes. We will start with Alabama and end with Wyoming.

Learning Goals

The goals of this on-going class is to familiarize ourselves on a deeper level with all the states in this country, and also understand the environmental impact of human actions that is contributing to species being threatened and endangered in each one. We will look at land use and economics of the state and how it relates to it's ecology. We will focus on the bad news but above all on the good news. Knowledge is power.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I went to law school for animal and environmental law. Before law school, I was a successful filmmaker who often focused on the natural world and how human's fit into to it (do they?!). I love asking the hard questions and helping students hone in on or reconnect to the strong sense of empathy we have for other species and at the same time suggest tools to youth in order to empower them in their own projects related to the natural world, here and now. Knowledge is power!
