Class experience

In this class students will learn or review the following skills core objectives:
Understand the geometric properties of quadrilaterals to classify and define special types.
Use graphs to verify the properties of special quadrilaterals in real-world and mathematical problems.
Use relationships among sides and among angles of parallelograms in proofs.
Use relationships involving diagonals of parallelograms of transversal in proofs.
Determine whether a quadrilateral is parallelogram.
Understand properties of quadrilaterals as parallelograms.
Use properties of diagonals of rhombuses and rectangles.
Determine whether a parallelogram is a rhombus or a rectangle.
Understand properties of a parallelogram as a rhombus of a rectangle.
Verify, Understand, and use properties of trapezoids and kites in proofs and as indirect methods of measurements.
Use properties of special figures to name coordinates on the coordinate plane.
Prove theorems using figures in the coordinate plane.
Describe and analyze figures in the coordinate plane.
Use formulas to find the area of a parallelogram.
To use formulas to find the area of a trapezoid
Understand the properties of a trapezoid.
Use formulas to find the area of rhombus of a kite.
Understand the properties of a rhombus or a kite.
Calculate the area of a regular polygon.
To derive the formula for the area of a regular polygon.
Before coming to Outschool, I worked at a community college for 4 years. During that time, my job consisted of instructing math classes and working with students below college level math and English. During this time, I saw a lot of students who were not prepared for the discovery and problem-solving element of math in college. Most students struggle with middle school math concepts in real-world applications. Without this foundation of math fluency and problem-solving student struggle with harder math concepts. As my child starts middle math the urgency of making sure she has a proper foundation of math became real. I decided to homeschool and joined this community of homeschoolers.
I believe all students can succeed when they are taught in a style they understand. I would describe my style as Charlotte Mason or discovery, but I feel students need a mix of drill or classical method for foundational math concepts. If you believe that this style is how your learner understands, then I encourage you to sign up for my course.
A geometry set is required for this class. Any set that has the following items will do:
A ruler (12 inches and 30 cm)
A protractor
A compass

Your learner will also need a notebook to write in. Geometry has its own set of vocabulary and learning it can be like learning a new language. Students will have a set of vocabulary term they must put in their geometry dictionary (notebook) each week.
