1-2 hours per week. Each week, there will be a quiz for students to complete to test their knowledge. Additional tasks and supplemental materials will be shared in the classroom for students to read, watch, and complete, as desired. Students will be encouraged to join in weekly discussion with classmates (pending section enrollment)!Assessment
Informal written assessment will be given in the classroom. If you would like more formal assessment for home-schooling purposes, please send me a message!Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
What lies in the deepest parts of the ocean? Deep sea creatures are remarkably well adapted for the extreme conditions below the thermocline. In this class, students will learn about this intense ecosystem and the weird critters that inhabit it. We will learn about everything from deep sea trenches to chemosynthesis to bioluminescence to deep sea gigantism, discussing many animals including blobfish, goblin sharks, hatchetfish, giant squids, giant isopods, yeti crabs, anglerfish, giant tube worms, and many more! Check out the syllabus to learn more. Each Monday, a pre-recorded video (touching on the basics of the scheduled topics) will be posted for students to watch. In addition, supplemental videos, homework assignments, tasks, fun activities, and discussion questions will be posted. Students who diligently complete the assignments and tasks will get the most out of the course. If you are taking this as a home-school course, please message me to discuss assessment (letter/percentage grades, etc). **Please note that both the pre-recorded videos and the supplementary videos will be via YouTube Throughout the course, I will facilitate online discussions in the Outschool classroom. This will allow students to discuss what they are learning with me. I will be in the classroom frequently discussing with students and providing feedback.
Learning Goals
After six weeks, students will have learned about the following:
1) Conditions in the deep sea and how animals must adapt to hypoxia, high pressure, and the absence of light
2) Common adaptations in the deep sea like chemosynthesis, bioluminescence and gigantism
3) At least fifteen unique deep sea species - this is the fun part!
4) The history of deep sea exploration, with an emphasis of Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh's missions

Lesson 2:
Deep Sea Gigantism
In this lesson, we explore the phenomenon of deep sea gigantism (why deep sea animals are often huge!) by learning about giant squids, giant isopods, and more.

Lesson 3:
Chemosynthesis
Students will learn about chemosynthesis, the amazing process by which animals such as giant tube worms or yeti crabs use deep sea chemicals to create their own food.

Lesson 4:
Bioluminescence, Part 1
