US Grade 3 - 6
You may have visited a zoo or aquarium and been amazed to see dolphins flip, jump, spin, and leap in response to their trainer's cues. How do trainers teach dolphins new tricks? Come learn with me! In this class, we will learn... 1) The basics behind "classical conditioning" 2) Tools and techniques used by trainers 3) About other animals that can be trained (dogs and more!) 4) Whether dolphins like being in shows This class will be an interactive lecture using slides, photos, and videos, as well as discussions throughout the class. At the end of class, we will take time to imagine what else dolphins could be trained to do and how we could train them. Watch out for Part Two of this class in the future where we will learn about what it takes to be an animal trainer and how trained animals can be used in law enforcement, as service animals, and more!
Learning Goals
Students will learn the basic strategies, techniques, and tools that trainers use to teach dolphins certain behaviors (tricks).
