There's something that is extra exciting when studying history and you stumble upon a mystery. In this class, we will be investigating some of the more well known unsolved "cold Cases" from around the world . Every other week, students will be presented with an outline of the case. We will discuss the evidence and theories that have been suggested. Students will then examine both primary and secondary sources to arrive at what they consider the best theory as to what actually happened. Students will then present their theories the following class in a case file format. They can work alone or in groups, dividing up research. Case file format: Background on the Historical Event The Most Plausible Theory At least three pieces of evidence that support that theory An explanation of each piece of evidence you present Explanation of one alternate theory and your reasons for discarding it Why this investigation was a worthwhile endeavor We will discuss the different types of sources and how to examine bias or misleading information. Week 1 - Introduction; Discussion of different types of sources and how to create a case file; What caused the Salem Witch Trials? Week 2 - Presentations and discussions Week 3 - What happened to the people at Roanoke? Week 4 - Presentations and discussions Week 5 - What happened to the crew of the Mary Celeste? Week 6 - Presentations and discussions Week 7 - Who really assassinated John F. Kennedy? Week 8 - Presentations and discussions Week 9 - Was there a city of Atlantis? This class will cover the death and/or disappearance of different people throughout history. This will be covered at an age appropriate manner. All topics will be presented from multiple perspectives as the goal of this class is to teach learners how to ask questions and research.
There may be some Youtube videos that are seen during this class. I will share my screen and learners will not need to access them on their own.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Sources
This class is designed to get to students to ask questions about history. They will be encouraged to not only use the resources that are provided during class, but also to conduct their own research and discover new questions and sources. Some of the sources that I will be using in class on odd weeks are, but not limited to:
(Some of these will offer theories that students will be encouraged to discount or to find further evidence of.)
(Student presentations will be on even weeks.)
